My Ideal Client

As of Winter 2023, I am not accepting new individual or couples but do have openings in my Men's Groups

My Approach to Helping

(I am currently only accepting new clients for Men's Group Therapy) In my experience, life is better and easier if you have someone that understands you, sees it from your point of view, and helps you navigate through it. A good therapist is like a fellow traveler who journeys with us into awareness, facilitating the insight necessary to heal and grow. I am a passionate facilitator of this process, helping my clients make sense of their lives and relationships, heal what's kept them stuck, explore new ways of being and live richly. The therapy we do is deep and has long-lasting effects, and the changes become your second nature, even after therapy ends.

My Personal Beliefs and Interests

Before becoming a therapist, I worked for six years as a welder, four years as a homesteader, and ten years as a political organizer and activist. At age 40, I spent four years finishing my undergraduate degree and earning my Masters degree in Social Work. I've worked for the past 26 years in Portland, first at community mental health clinics and then for the past 22 years in private practice. I completed two years in post-graduate studies in Contemporary Relational Psychoanalysis, and advanced training in marriage and couples therapy. I have a 30+ years meditation practice and have taught mindfulness meditation to personality disordered clients in outpatient settings.

Techniques I Use

Specialties

  • Eclectic External link

While primarity psychodynamic (exploring underlying habitual thoughts, beliefs and behaviors), I also am trained in attachment theory, Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT), Cognitive-Behavioral therapy, marriage and family therapy, Jungian-based depth therapy, and contemporary Relational Psychoanalysis.

Issues I Treat

Specialties

  • Relationship / Marriage Issues External link

I help couples identify negative emotional interactional styles rather than assigning blame. One safety has strengthened, the underlying emotions or hurt, anger, fear, and sadness emerge that allow couples to more deeply communicate while re-establishing trust. With trust strengthened, we can negotiate differences, heal past wounds, and let go of disconnecting beliefs and attitudes.

  • Depression External link

To understand depression, I consider genetic predisposition, childhood traumas, relationships disruptions, capacity for insight and spiritual receptivity. The first step isto embrace sadness, emptiness and despair as powerful teachers of life's most profound lessons, not simply as diseases or symptoms to be eliminated by any means necessary.
