My Approach to Helping

I operate on the belief that you already have what you need within yourself to experience fulfillment in your life. Unfortunately, there are a lot of things that can get in the way and leave you feeling like you are falling short of who you should be and what you should be doing. This can lead to a sense of being out of sync and other symptoms that are causing you to seek therapy. I believe that the most important task set before you is to make meaning of your life and to remain steadfast in this task. This is done by increasing awareness of your experience and letting a new understanding come forth, one that clarifies your identity, results in a shift in the way you experience yourself and your relationships and a feeling of peace and presence in everyday life. My passion is to help you see your struggles as an opportunity for growth and aiding your search for understanding. I find it rewarding and I'm humbled by the opportunity to witness bravery on a daily basis.

My Personal Beliefs and Interests

I am a licensed mental health counselor who has been providing therapy for Clark County residents since 2008. I grew up in Portland and got my training in Seattle. I graduated from Seattle University's Master of Arts in Clinical Psychology in 2005. Before settling in the Portland/Vancouver area, I spent 2 years in London and I worked as volunteer counselor for individuals without insurance.

Techniques I Use

Specialties

  • Existential External link

Whether meaning and purpose are things you think about a lot or not, they are core factors in what drives you from day to day. You may be seeking therapy because the things going on in your life have caused you to revisit the questions, 'Who am I?' and 'What do I want from life?' The existential approach believes that answering these questions are essential to health and well-being.

  • Cognitive Behavioral (CBT) External link

You may be seeking therapy because you are struggling with the way you are feeling or acting. These patterns are often influenced by inaccurate or negative ways you are thinking about yourself or interpreting situations with others. I use CBT to illuminate these patterns and help you change them.

Issues I Treat

Specialties

  • Self-Esteem External link

I enjoy helping individuals increase their self-esteem. It is one of the tasks that I feel the most confident will end with success. Low self-esteem is often about negative self-talk based on faulty beliefs about oneself due to past experience. These beliefs are often powerful and convincing. Therapy is about unmasking these beliefs, stealing their power and creating a new sense of self.

  • Relationship / Marriage Issues External link

Everyone needs others in their life, yet everyone is unique. This can contribute to conflict and other difficulties. These difficulties can be most pronounced in romantic relationships and it's easy for bad habits of communication to lead to deep hurt. I want to help you understand your role in these dynamics in order to increase your ability to have successful and resilient bonds with others.

  • Adjustment Disorder External link

Adjustment Disorder is an experience that many people have. It is often what brings someone back into therapy or causes someone to seek therapy for the first time. Many of the clients I have been working with over the years begin therapy when their life is thrown off by a major life event. Much of the work I have done has involved processing and adjusting to significant life changes.

  • Anxiety External link

The theoretical orientation I was trained in focused heavily on the causes and treatment of anxiety. In addition to my undergraduate and graduate training, I have had over 9 years experience diagnosing and treating individuals with various types of anxiety diagnoses.

  • Depression External link

The theoretical orientation I was trained in focused heavily on the causes and treatment of depression. In addition to my undergraduate and graduate training, I have had over 9 years experience diagnosing and treating individuals with various types of mood-related diagnoses.
