My Ideal Client

I work with children and adults dealing with anxiety, trauma, identity issues, depression and grief and loss. Many of my clients are part of the LGBTQI community.

My Approach to Helping

In my practice, I seek to create a non-judgemental and safe space for individuals and families to cope with life stressors and make the changes they desire. I draw from relational therapy, mindfulness-based therapy, cognitive-behavioral therapy, play therapy and strengths-based therapy. I work with individuals and families dealing with such life challenges as divorce, trauma, life transitions, identity issues, anxiety, depression, interpersonal conflict and loss. In general, I believe learning how to identify and tolerate emotions is key to creating change and reducing anxiety and depression. Collaborating with psychiatric professionals and/or alternative care professionals when necessary is important in providing a more complete and effective therapeutic experience.

My Personal Beliefs and Interests

Since graduating with my Master's in Social Work from New York University in 2001, I have worked in several mental health agencies providing individual, family and group therapy both in New York and in Portland. I was also a clinical supervisor at an out-patient mental health clinic for several years and currently supervise therapists in my private practice who are working towards licensure in the state of Oregon. I am also trained in trauma focused CBT and EMDR (Eye-Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) which can both be effective tools for children and adults who have experienced trauma. I also provide parent consultation and help strengthen parenting skills.

Techniques I Use

Specialties

  • EMDR External link

I am trained to use EMDR technique. EMDR or Eye-Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing is an effective tool for children and adults who have experienced trauma. EMDR can help clients to create change and movement when one may be feeling stuck due to unresolved traumas and negative self-beliefs.

  • Play Therapy  External link

Play therapy is a helpful therapeutic method that allows children to express a range of emotions and thoughts and learn how to cope with stress and trauma. Children's natural mode of expression is through play and this modality fits into their schema about self and the world around them. Play therapy can be directive or non-directive depending on the needs of the child.

  • Mindfulness-based External link

Mindfulness-based therapy is designed to help reduce anxiety, depression and overall, levels of distress. One of the key goals of mindfulness is to look at how our thoughts affect our emotions, our physical body reactions, and our behaviors. Increasing our ability to notice more clearly one's automatic thoughts, emotional reactions and behaviors, can help to create more agency in our lives.
