My Approach to Helping

I approach my work with five things in mind. I strive to develop a strong therapeutic relationship with you. I meet you where you are in life, welcoming you to bring your authentic self to session. I help you identify and clarify problems and challenges. I help you build and hone new skills, patterns of thought, and ways of being. Finally, we bring it all together so you can solve problems and make meaningful and lasting changes. I find value in using a variety of counseling theories and techniques, but specialize in Internal Family Systems (IFS). Through an IFS lens, I'll help you get to know your internal world, specifically your core self and your parts. I also utilize cognitive behavioral, and existential modalities in my practice.

My Personal Beliefs and Interests

I have studied psychology and counseling since 1993. I earned a Bachelors Degree in psychology in 2001, a Masters degree in psychology in 2006, a Masters degree in Counseling in 2013. I have been a therapist for over ten years and am currently a Licensed Professional Counselor. I’ve focused my scholarly and professional interests on self-conscious emotions such as shame and guilt, anxiety, depression, chronic illness and disability, academic success, career exploration and decision making, human creativity and problem solving, and positive psychology and optimal experience.

Techniques I Use

Specialties

  • Internal Family Systems (IFS) External link

I have completed level 1 training in Internal Family Systems through the IFS institute. In addition to trainings I keep current on IFS through readings and online education.

  • Cognitive Behavioral (CBT) External link

I focused much of my study as an undergraduate and a graduate student learning the practice of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy. My professional supervision and development has been centered around developing my skills as a cognitive behavioral therapist, and integrating it with expressive arts work.

Issues I Treat

Specialties

  • ADHD External link

I have focused on treating adults with ADHD since I first began practice. I have specialized training in assessing, diagnosing and treating ADHD in adults. I take a strengths based approach to helping adults with ADHD. We will focus on your strengths and passions, but will also identify and work on areas in which you wish to improve. Finally, we will address the emotional components of ADHD and work to develop healthy and effective coping skills.

  • Men's Issues External link

Men are being asked by our society to engage in a delicate balancing act of change that requires they break out of calcified conceptions of traditional masculinity and settle into a new form that leaves behind destructive values and embraces the best men have to offer. I love helping men identify what being a man means and then striving to be the best man they can.

  • Relationship / Marriage Issues External link

Studying relationships and how to help couples repair and build satisfying partnerships is one of my current passions. When working with couples I help them identify past resentments and current problematic behaviors that damage the relationship. I then help couples process those resentments and facilitate behavior change in session.

  • Anxiety External link

I have been working with students and clients to help them overcome anxiety since 2003. I utilize two pronged approach to treating anxiety, first by teaching my clients skills and techniques such as mindfulness practice to help them cope with and reduce anxiety. Second, I work with clients to uncover the root causes of anxiety and help them process those causes in our therapeutic sessions.

  • Depression External link

Depression and anxiety are often closely linked to feelings of shame and guilt. I engaged in deep study of these emotions while working on my masters thesis, specifically focusing on how people perceive these emotions. I have also helped many clients who are depressed understand the causes of depression, develop habits and practice techniques they can use to overcome depression.
