My Ideal Client

I welcome clients who need a safe place to share their thoughts and feelings without judgment. I want to help you decide what you need to solve your problem and to give you courage and coping strategies to move forward with your life.

My Approach to Helping

My therapeutic approach is Rational Emotive Therapy. REBT is a form of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy whereby individuals identify, challenge and dispute irrational beliefs. The therapy intervention works by helping the individual adopt and implement new adaptive beliefs. I also use EMDR, Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing, which is an treatment that facilitates the accessing and processing of adverse and traumatic memories to bring these to a healthy resolution.

Why I Became a Therapist

The short answer is because I felt called to serve individuals who are in distress and/or who have been hurt by religious institutions or been disappointed by life's outcomes. I became a therapist especially to support people of faith to better understand how the body, mind and spirit are interconnected. My values are in line with Christianity, but I welcome people who do not espouse faith values.

Techniques I Use

  • EMDR External link

Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing therapy is an integrative psychotherapy approach that has been extensively researched and proven effective for the treatment of trauma. Readiness for EMDR therapy is assessed during psychotherapy sessions and if appropriate, I will use a standardized protocol that can potentially lower a client's distress. I use bilateral eye movement, pulsers and tones.

  • Psychodynamic  External link

Psychodynamic therapy is a relational orientation, where the client-therapist relationship is central to the approach. It becomes a major tool in helping a client access their emotions and process their thoughts. It is in this conversant relationship that a client is able to feel heard and empowered.

  • Couples Counseling External link

I am a facilitator for couples counseling, including pre-marital counseling using the method, Prepare, Enrich. It is a directive method where I utilize online assessments and develop a profile for the couple. We discuss the roles and expectations of each individual and explore how to relate at an optimal level. Please note: I am not licensed as a marriage and family therapist, but as a licensed professional counselor.

Issues I Treat

  • Spirituality External link

I help clients stabilize their view of themselves, so that their identity is not rooted in their failures or their accomplishments, but in their trusted higher power. I support clients with their faith values, which enable them to transcend the complexities of life. I help them gain a sense of grounded-ness in their lives that will stand the test of time through the good and the bad times of life.

  • Relationship / Marriage Issues External link

Relationships are a part of life. I help clients explore their role in their relationships, teach them how to communicate effectively and clearly and problem-solve situations that have left them stuck.

  • OCD External link

I help clients process how their obsessions and compulsions have worked for them and how they have been a hindrance. Obsessive thoughts are usually about meeting a need, so I help the client investigate the deeper need beneath their obsessive patterns and find more healthy ways to cope with life.

  • Anxiety External link

I am skilled in helping a client uncover the deeper issues that may be underlying their present anxiety. My approach is to allow the client to process their thoughts and feelings, validate their efforts to cope with a difficult stressor and then teach the client how to live in the moment, rather than the future.

  • Depression External link

I use empathy, active listening, strong attending skills and silence to help the client process their feelings. I create an environment where clients can broaden their range of feelings, and help them uncover feelings that have been buried or gone unrecognized. I encourage clients to increase their physical activity if applicable, engage their world again and find the courage to live again.
