My Ideal Client

Many of my clients have experienced trauma and are experiencing symptoms like depression, anxiety, inability to concentrate, and fatigue. I have a wide array of tools drawn from a diverse blend of counseling modalities. I try my best to adjust my counseling approach to the needs of each client without firmly adhering to one particular approach. In other words, I find what works for my clients. My clients feel cared for and are often able to cultivate positive change in their lives.

My Approach to Helping

My approach to helping is eclectic. I like to give my clients tools that they can use in a variety of settings. Sitting cross-legged in meditation can be a helpful practice at home, but it is unlikely to help a client as they are struggling with anxiety symptoms while walking through the grocery store. I'm a pragmatist. If something is not working, I find a unique approach. I also believe that what happens in counseling can exacerbate existing problems for clients if the counselor is not paying attention. Healing can only happen within the context of a therapeutic relationship defined by support, empathy, transparency, and understanding.

Why I Became a Therapist

I believe, as does Irvin Yalom, that we are all "fellow travelors" on a road to wellbeing. Along the way I've realized some things that helped me heal and ultimately guided me toward a career in counseling. The first was that believing that wellness was possible was foundational. The second was that I needed, no matter what, to continue on a forward path even if each of my steps were small. The third was that healing often takes place within a therapeutic relationship. Humans are relational beings and experience healing within the context of relationship. I want to help clients on that journey, as others have helped me.
