My Ideal Client

Through non-judgmental observation of self (mindfulness) and somatic experiencing, we can discover internal conflicts and work to disrupt unwanted patterns in your life. I may be a good fit for you if you want to better understand how your unconscious experiences are influencing your day-to-day choices. I am passionate about supporting you in untangling codependent dynamics, and experiencing greater clarity and authenticity within your relationships.

My Approach to Helping

I believe a key to personal growth is through understanding both the known and unknown parts of ourselves, so we can move towards authenticity, insight, and choice. I enjoy supporting people in shifting from codependency to personal empowerment within their relationships. I am passionate about helping clients connect with what lights them up, and bringing non-judgmental curiosity into the self-exploration process. I utilize somatic experiencing in my approach, with the framework that the body often stores our past traumas and unconscious experiences. I draw from techniques in Internal Family Systems, existential therapy, Gestalt, somatic therapy, Nonviolent Communication, Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT), Buddhist psychology, transpersonal therapy, Jungian psychology (e.g. "shadow work"), and motivational interviewing. I have a background as a musician, and can incorporate the expressive arts into therapy (music, art, writing, drama, movement) for those interested.

My Personal Beliefs and Interests

I believe that the systems of which we are a part necessarily influence our opportunities, choices, and mental wellbeing. My approach is informed by social justice, and I welcome conversations about your identities. This may include experiences of privilege and/or oppression, and how any similarities or differences between us regarding our identities may affect your experience of oppression or power in the therapy room. In my personal endeavors I seek to maintain a commitment to social justice, most recently volunteering with an organization that teaches Nonviolent Communication in prisons.

Techniques I Use

Specialties

  • Transpersonal External link

I believe that a holistic awareness of self includes how we understand our place in the universe. We all grapple with who we are and how to find meaning and purpose in life, whether we are atheist, agnostic, religious, recovering from religion trauma, spiritual, or somewhere in between. My graduate degree concentration was Mindfulness-based Transpersonal Counseling, and I aim to support you in exploring and defining your own sense of spirituality (or lack thereof) on your own terms.

  • Nonviolent Communication External link

Nonviolent Communication (NVC) posits that beneath conflict lies vulnerable emotions and unmet needs. By identifying our feelings and needs and communicating them directly, conflict resolution becomes possible. I first became passionate about NVC when I experienced how much it improved my own life. Now committed to the philosophy, I have been teaching NVC for years, including with teens, couples, in prisons, and among therapy clinicians.

  • Gestalt External link

Gestalt therapy is a dynamic approach that posits that all of our traumas and histories can be found in the present moment. To access and process these experiences, we direct our attention to what we notice moment by moment in our minds, bodies, and emotions. This approach involves somatic experiencing, mindfulness, and authentic relating between the therapist and client. My graduate program focused on Gestalt therapy and I have taken a year of experiential coursework and training in Gestalt.

Issues I Treat

Specialties

  • Spirituality External link

I believe that a holistic awareness of self includes how we understand our place in the universe. We all grapple with who we are and how to find meaning and purpose in life, whether we are atheist, agnostic, religious, recovering from religion trauma, spiritual, or somewhere in between. My graduate degree concentration was Mindfulness-based Transpersonal Counseling, and I aim to support you in exploring and defining your own sense of spirituality (or lack thereof) on your own terms.

  • Personal Growth External link

Therapy doesn't have to just be about "healing" wounds from childhood, but also living into our potential. Our wounds can often be the greatest access points to self-awareness and eventual growth. What lights you up in life? How do you engage with challenges and learn from them? What would it feel like if you were one step closer to your authentic self? What does authenticity mean for you? These are questions we can explore as you reflect on how you want to show up in the world.

  • Codependency External link

I think of codependency as the ways in which we unconsciously make agreements with others in which both parties get their needs met in indirect (and sometimes harmful) ways. Working through codependency involves getting in touch with our true motivations, realizing where we have charged others with our care, and taking ownership of our own feelings and needs. My approach is influenced by my studies in Nonviolent Communication and the 12-step philosophy.
