My Approach to Helping

My counseling style is characterized by warmth, authenticity, compassion, and humor. My clients and I work together to create an atmosphere that encourages psychological depth. I approach Sex Therapy and Mental Health Psychotherapy as collaborations in which we get to know your inner world together. As a mindfulness and body-oriented psychotherapist, I help you to uncover the psychological, somatic, and sensory experiences that have shaped how you approach the world, providing opportunities for sexual and psychological healing and transformation.

My Personal Beliefs and Interests

I have been working as a therapist in clinical settings since 2005. I received a Master’s Degree in Somatic Counseling Psychology from Naropa University -- a mindfulness- based university -- in Boulder, CO in 2008. Sex Therapy is my current passion. Many people feel alone in their sexual desires, hopes, traumas, and disappointments. I invite clients to explore these areas in an open, embodied, non-judgmental way so they can move towards full acceptance and expression of their sexuality. I welcome clients struggling with sexual dysfunction and pain as well as those recovering from sexual trauma. I have a particular interest in working with those exploring alternative sexual behaviors and relationship styles. I work with diverse clientele on issues arising from oppression and inequality. I welcome clients of all genders and sexual orientations in my practice.

Techniques I Use

  • Somatic Therapy (Body Centered) External link

Body-Centered Psychotherapy addresses the experience of the whole person, investigating the body and mind as a unified system. Thoughts, emotions, sensations, movements, impulses, and beliefs can be symptoms of suffering or solutions to it. Bringing awareness to all areas of your experience can help you lead a fuller, more integrated life.

  • Psychodynamic  External link

In Psychodynamic Psychotherapy, we work to understand your internal world. We investigate the multilayered experiences that shape your way of taking in and making sense of the world, mapping the personal landscape through which you experience your life.

  • Mindfulness-based External link

Psychic suffering usually comes from people's discomfort with themselves -- their thoughts, moods, sensations, feelings, impulses, and actions. In Mindfulness-based therapy we create an environment which encourages curiosity and compassion, teaching you to observe and welcome what you are experiencing so you can develop presence and perspective rather than judging yourself or seeking escape.

Issues I Treat

  • Women's Issues External link

Women experience psychological and sexual consequences from living in a male dominated society. I am passionate about working with women on the specific challenges we face in our society each day. In addition, I specialize in working with women during life transitions including pregnancy, motherhood, perimenopause, and menopause.

  • Sexual Problems External link

Sexuality is a core component of our experience in the world. Finding a clinician who is capable of speaking comfortably and non judgmentally about sexuality can be difficult. I practice holistic, embodied sex therapy with a wide array of clients seeking assistance with sexual function, relationship, intimacy, and identity.

  • Relationship / Marriage Issues External link

I work with clients who struggle with both peer and romantic relationships. Increasing awareness of one's own wants, needs, emotions, and sexual desires builds the foundation for clear communication with others, creating the opportunity for more satisfying, supportive relationships. I work with couples to improve their mutual understanding, clear road blocks, and increase satisfaction.

  • PTSD External link

I work with adults living with the long term effects of traumatic abuse and neglect such as chronic anxiety, hypervigilance, difficulty with trust, and impulsivity. I specialize in clients who grew up in environments unable to meet their emotional and relational needs, such as Adult Children of Alcoholics and Adult Children of people with personality disorders and other severe mental illnesses.

  • Anxiety External link

Anxiety becomes problematic when chronic repetitive thoughts, a sense of dread, or physical symptoms of nervousness get in the way of experiencing your life as it unfolds. We can work together to help you recognize anxiety when it gets activated inside you, manage the symptoms to limit distress, and decode the the information anxiety provides about your emotional and psychological life.
