My Ideal Client

I see you: you're exhausted and anxious. You take care of everybody else before yourself and you give so much of your time, energy, and emotional caring. You are ruled by guilt and feel like you can't say "no" to people because you're terrified they will be mad at you or you'll be rejected. You bravely try to suppress your feelings and needs in order to make people around you happy, but sometimes you feel so full of emotion that it just spills out.

My Approach to Helping

Your emotions exhaust and frustrate you-- why are they so strong and what does it say about you if you can't control them?! We don't talk about emotions well in our society, we often feel a lot of shame because of that. In truth, emotions get a bad wrap; because they feel so bad we push them away. However, I believe they are misunderstood and are actually our strongest allies and open the path to our deepest wisdom. I can help you tune into yourself in a curious and compassionate way so that you better understand the signals they are sending in order to feel more balanced, rested, and get more of your needs met. I can help you make sense of what your emotional, physical, and mental bodies are communicating so that you can release old wounds that block you today. You can learn how to make peace with yourself while having better boundaries with others and freeing yourself from people pleasing behavior.

My Approach to Helping

I am a firm believer that therapy can be a fun, dynamic, and illuminating process-- even one with lots of laughter!  The best investment you can ever make is one in yourself.  I bring a compassionate and non-judgmental presence while also gently challenging you to look deeply and kindly at blocks that keep you stuck. I am an IFS therapist. IFS recognizes that we all contain many parts of our personality and asserts all of them are doing the best they can to protect us and manage our life. Many times our parts have learned protective jobs during traumatic or painful periods and they continue to do these jobs even when the actual helpfulness has run its course.  For example, if you grew up in a household with angry, scary people, you may have learned that the best way to avoid problems was to keep people around you as happy as possible no matter what.  This may have worked beautifully then, but those enduring patterns may cause you a lot of challenges in your adult life.

This approach recognizes that we all contain many parts and all of them are doing the best they can to protect us and manage our life. Many times our parts have learned protective jobs during traumatic or painful periods, and they continue to do these jobs even when the actual helpfulness has run its course. This work is built on a couple of very important premises: All parts are welcome; All parts have protective intent (even if our behavior seems destructive); We have what we need to heal.

Issues I Treat

Specialties

  • PTSD External link

PTSD is treatable! I am always surprised how many people don't know that. This is not something you have to learn to live with or endure. I have been treating PTSD since 2008. I developed a PTSD treatment program for a local health care organization. I am trained in EMDR, Sensorimotor Psychotherapy, and IFS, which all are beautiful, evidence based treatments that offer real and meaningful healing.
