My Ideal Client

Do you struggle with intimate relationships and getting what you want in romance? My clients want to delve deeply into how they keep themselves from what they believe they really want. Many of my clients are sex and love addicts - with an emphasis on the 'love' part - or they suspect they might be. Lots of couples seek me out, as well, for help with their relationships, often because of issues with their sexual lives.

My Approach to Helping

I’ve devoted my life’s work to helping men and women struggling around intimacy. I focus on the ways in which we get in the way of our authentic relationship to intimacy, including sacrificing ourselves for love and sex. I’m also always interested in the ways in which our culture prevents intimacy and also gives no guidelines or models for honest intimacy. My aim is to support people as they work to engage authentically and lovingly with those around them. I work from a depth-focused, existential-humanistic perspective, focusing on the here and now. I provide an opportunity for real change, authentic discussion, and genuine wholeness.

Why I Became a Therapist

My specialty grew initially from the success of my memoir Loose Girl: A Memoir of Promiscuity, when I discovered thousands of people suffering in similar ways that I had. I counsel clients with a range of sexual behaviors. What all my clients have in common is a feeling of unhappiness around their sex or love lives. I'm constantly exploring with my clients the ways they create obstacles to intimacy with others. I am very interested in the ways in which our culture works to set many people up for failure in both sex and intimacy.

Techniques I Use

  • Humanistic  External link

As a humanistic therapist, my work is to accompany the client on his/her journey through his/her process of self-awareness and growth with compassion and support

  • Existential External link

As an existential therapist I'm interested in the deeper anxieties we all experience: what is your purpose here, and how do you find gratification and happiness in the time you're here?

  • Depth Therapy External link

I help my clients delve deeply into longstanding self-awareness.

Issues I Treat

  • Women's Issues External link

My work is deeply concerned with the ways in which our culture influences and codes our experiences as women regarding sex and relationships

  • Relationship / Marriage Issues External link

My work is focused on the many ways we prevent intimacy and genuine connection with one another due to internal and external obstacles. I also specialize in sexual issues among couples. Along with my colleague, Gillian Chachere, I also provide a unique, integrative, co-facilitated approach to couples counseling. Learn more here:

  • Self-Esteem External link

Self-esteem is the key to authentic engagement with oneself, interpersonally, and with the greater world

  • Sexual Addiction External link

My specialty is less 'sexual addiction' and more 'sex and love addiction,' which includes relationship and romance addiction.

  • Personal Growth External link

My work includes a focus on depth psychotherapy, which feeds the intention of living a self-examined life.
