My Approach

While my style is holistic and client-driven, it is grounded in several theoretical frameworks, particularly DBT and Sensorimotor Psychotherapy. Both of these modalities are founded on the concept that awareness of our present moment lived experience is key to healing and growth. Our lived experience, however, is not just in our minds. It also resides in our bodies – the clenched stomach that may occur with loss or fear; the tight shoulders that may accompany stress and anxiety; the warm, relaxed feeling that can come when talking with a good friend or being out in nature. Traditional talk therapy often ignores the experience and wisdom that is housed in our bodies. My approach is about discovery of our thoughts, feelings, and emotions that often drive our behavior, as well as our somatic experience that influences and colors our daily lives.

My Background

Ever since I can remember I have been curious about people and the experiences that shape who they are. I began to study this interest formally almost 20 years ago during undergrad, studying Psychology and Individual and Family Studies at Concordia College, in Moorhead, MN. After college, I moved out to the Pacific Northwest drawn by my love for mountains and lush valleys. In 2011, I earned my Masters degree in Counseling from Southwestern College in Santa Fe, NM. Since then I have worked in community mental health clinics and a crisis/trauma treatment center, as well as at a DBT clinic and in private practice. I have also worked in residential treatment facilities with troubled teens and young adults as well as developmentally disabled adults. I have received special training in trauma, Attachment Theory, Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), Radically Open DBT, and Sensorimotor Psychotherapy (Level II).
