My Approach

I utilize a variety of approaches in my counseling practice. My approach with each child or family is informed through my assessment process and understanding of what the issues are, the age and cognitive and developmental level of the child, and what style and method of therapy will most resonate with my client. I utilize cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) throughout the counseling process. My counseling office lends itself to a variety of exploration with the use of sandtray, play therapy, bibliography (writing and journaling), and the visual arts through drawing, painting, and sculpture with clay.

My Background

Thirty seven years ago I began my work with children and families. In this period of time, whether as a teacher or counselor, I came to understand that no one individual can serve all populations. I will always be truthful with you if I believe I am not the best therapist for your needs, and I will do my best to offer referrals that may be a better fit for you. Over the years I have counseled children and pre-adolescents with Depression, Anxiety, Attachment Issues, ADHD, Aspergers, Selective Mutism and Expressive Language challenges, Divorce, Loss and Grief, Drug and Alcohol issues within the family, and Family Systems. My work has always included working with the parents in helping provide education and support in the parenting role. My work with parents and children is collaborative, as I believe this is the most effective and powerful means for developing empathy, compassion, and understanding in the therapeutic process. I will also work with your child's school, by your request.
