My Background and Approach

Art Therapy does not require nor expect an individual to be "an artist". In a typical session the therapist offers art materials and provides directives based on and in the service of an individual's presenting issues and treatment goals. The session provides an opportunity for an individual to symbolize experience through graphic means, this may include verbal communication as well. "Art therapy engages the mind, body, and spirit in ways that are distinct from verbal articulation alone. Kinesthetic, sensory, perceptual, and symbolic opportunities invite alternative modes of receptive and expressive communication, which can circumvent the limitations of language. Visual and symbolic expression gives voice to experience and empowers individual, communal, and societal transformation." -American Art Therapy Association
