My Ideal Client

In my clinical work with children with ASD I focus on discovering what a child wants and is interested in, what are their strengths and I work by using those strengths to overcome challenges. "Hearing a child's voice" as well as giving them a voice is my goal. I specialize in working with children who are verbal, but may not have functional communication, and I help them build effective communication, social, and academic skills. My goals is to make learning fun for both the child and myself.

My Approach to Helping

My approach is rooted in the principles and procedures of applied behavior analysis (ABA). In working with children I combine structured, therapist-led strategies with less structured, natural flow, child-led  strategies. I deliver these strategies with compassion, flexibility, and wonder, to teach communication, social, and self-help skills. I have 14 years of experience coaching parents, teachers, and therapists working with children. In my coaching I use behavior skills training (BST) and relationship building to help parents and teachers become effective and responsive interaction partners for their children. I provide supervision for registered behavior technicians and BCBA candidates who are interested in becoming successful behavior analysts.

My Personal Beliefs and Interests

I have a Ph.D in Psychology with an emphasis in Behavior Analysis. I am a licensed behavior analyst and a board certified behavior analyst. I specialize in improving communication, play, and social skills using a verbal behavior approach together with pivotal response training, shaping, and prompting. I also have 14 years of experience working with parents and teachers,  conducting supervision, and parent coaching programs. In spite of having worked with  children  and their loved ones for many years, I continue to feel amazed by each child's candor, humor, and their unique constellation of strengths and weaknesses. I also continue to be amazed by the strength of each family I've worked with and their willingness to do the hard work required to expand their children's experiences and skills.

Techniques I Use

Issues I Treat

  • Parenting External link

I think parents are a major contributor to a child's success and well-being. I work with parents of children who have learning difficulties or ASD to help them discover their children's strengths, how to use those strengths to then work on weaknesses, and how to build a better relationship with their child.

  • Learning Disorder External link

I have experience of working with a broad range of skill deficits that may accompany a learning disorder by breaking down a task in smaller steps, identifying missing pre-requisites for a certain skill, using shaping and prompting to help a student overcome current difficulties and improve their style of learning. The methods I use are successful when coupled motivational strategies.

  • Aspergers External link

I have experience with children with Asperger in identifying some of the causes of problem behaviors that may appear in certain settings and helping with self-expression and self-advocacy

  • Autism External link

I have 19 years of experience working with children with autism. My style of therapy is very effective at improving language skills in children with autism such as self-expression, descriptions of situations, question asking and answering, and many other aspects of language. I also have both research and clinical experience with helping parents become successful teachers and interaction partners.
