In my clinical work with children with ASD I focus on discovering what a child wants and is interested in, what are their strengths and I work by using those strengths to overcome challenges. "Hearing a child's voice" as well as giving them a voice is my goal. I specialize in working with children who are verbal, but may not have functional communication, and I help them build effective communication, social, and academic skills. My goals is to make learning fun for both the child and myself.
Specialties
I think parents are a major contributor to a child's success and well-being. I work with parents of children who have learning difficulties or ASD to help them discover their children's strengths, how to use those strengths to then work on weaknesses, and how to build a better relationship with their child.
I have experience of working with a broad range of skill deficits that may accompany a learning disorder by breaking down a task in smaller steps, identifying missing pre-requisites for a certain skill, using shaping and prompting to help a student overcome current difficulties and improve their style of learning. The methods I use are successful when coupled motivational strategies.
I have experience with children with Asperger in identifying some of the causes of problem behaviors that may appear in certain settings and helping with self-expression and self-advocacy
I have 19 years of experience working with children with autism. My style of therapy is very effective at improving language skills in children with autism such as self-expression, descriptions of situations, question asking and answering, and many other aspects of language. I also have both research and clinical experience with helping parents become successful teachers and interaction partners.
