My Background and Approach

I was raised and educated in the San Francisco Bay Area, where I learned to value diversity in people. For many years I have worked with children and families, as well as adult couples and individuals. Education and experience has taught me the importance of the early relationships we have with our caregivers, and what can happen to us when those relationships do not meet our needs. My approach is integrative, meaning that I combine many theories of psychology to adapt to the needs of each client. I focus on developing a warm connection with you, which builds a foundation of security from which you can comfortably access and explore deeper layers of yourself. Therapy is most effective when you are able to access parts of yourself that you haven't yet cracked open. My approach is to support you in opening yourself up and safely exploring what is inside (hint: it's a lot!).

My Values as a Therapist

Therapy is usually one hour weekly. How much of a difference can that make? I want you to know that I value all that you choose to invest in your time with me: your time, money, and emotional investment. I am going to initiate difficult conversations for the benefit of your treatment. I ask that you give me feedback about what is or is not working for you in our work together. I value direct and open communication.

Techniques I Use

Specialties

  • Attachment Theory External link

We know that the way people experience their earliest relationships in life creates a foundation that impacts every relationship they will ever have in life. Attachment theory gives us a lens to investigate what those relationships may have been like for you and how you can make changes in order to have more fulfilling, loving, safe relationships in your life.

  • Somatic Therapy (Body Centered) External link

How do you know what you feel when you feel it? Where is it? When does it happen? Somatic therapy considers the individual as a whole, without separating the mind from the body. We add value to your experience in therapy when we include your whole self by mindfully exploring your felt sense of what you experience.

  • Couples Counseling External link

My tools for working with couples include somatic approaches, Hakomi, and EFT (emotionally focused therapy.) It is very typical for one member of a couple to be less enthusiastic about therapy, or for both couples to be wary of whether or not therapy can be helpful to them. I am dedicated to providing space for both members of a couple to express themselves without judgement. I support couples in finding their way.

Issues I Treat

Specialties

  • Personal Growth External link

Many people come to therapy with a strong sense of needing to grow and change even if they don't know exactly what that means for them yet. I will work with you to figure out how you would like to grow and heal in your life and support you as you move forward.

  • Compassion Fatigue External link

Many professionals experience compassion fatigue and vicarious trauma as a consequence of doing important work in a variety of helping professions. I understand the dynamics of these experiences and know how to support your processing and healing.

  • Spirituality External link

Throughout my education and adult life I have studied spirituality and a variety of world religions. I welcome clients of all religious and cultural backgrounds who wish to examine their relationship with their spirituality.

  • Postpartum External link

For too long there has been stigma about postpartum depression/anxiety. I endeavor to validate the experiences of individuals who have adverse experiences related to pregnancy, childbirth, and parenting.

  • Relationship / Marriage Issues External link

Whether you're looking to strengthen your relationship, decrease conflict, resolve sexual problems, or reevaluate your committment together, I can support and guide you toward resolution. I am LGBTQ affirming and welcome any and all clients who seek a safe and constructive place to work toward resolution in their relationship(s).
