My Ideal Client

My practice is one of thirds. About one-third of my clients are couples who are struggling to communicate and solve their problems respectfully. Another third is individuals struggling with some surface level difficulties of anxiety and/or depression. Under the surface is often a history of trauma and invalidation. Finally, a third of my practice is men working on being healthier and more respectful.

My Approach to Helping

Firstmost, I use science to guide my practice so that all the work I do is backed by decades of strong research, indicating that it makes couples and individuals healthier. Specifically, when working with couples I use a behavioral skill-building approach. We will learn and practice effective communication skills so that you can resolve your conflicts respectfully and with increasing amounts of emotional intimacy. I use cognitive-behavioral therapy to help individuals conquer their depression and anxiety and learn the skills necessary to keep those symptoms at bay. I also specifically help men to improve their emotional wisdom and well-being, overcome anger and/or depression, and be happier and healthier humans, for themselves and their loved ones.

My Personal Beliefs and Interests

I earned my master of social work degree at University of Washington in 2000. I have worked in a variety of settings as a clinical social worker: -Doing drug and alcohol counseling at methadone clinics -Providing psychotherapy at a community based mental health clinic -Program lead at Clackamas County Mental Health in a program for young adults who had developed schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, borderline personality disorder or other severe and persistent mental illnesses and who were also suffering with drug dependency -Coordinator for a program at Oregon City High School for students with social and emotional needs -Owner of Oregon City Counseling and co-owner of Men’s Resource Center, both of which focused on providing Domestic Violence Intervention groups for men -Currently the owner of Oregon City Counseling where I continue my work with men and have expanded to doing work with couples and helping individuals with anxiety and depression

Techniques I Use

Specialties

  • Couples Counseling External link

I use a behavioral approach to couples counseling. There is solid evidence that learning, and practicing communication skills builds healthier, more respectful, and more emotionally intimate relationships. I have been using this approach with couples, and with men focusing on their relationship skills, for nearly 20 years.

  • Anger Management Therapy External link

I use cognitive behavioral therapy to help individuals better understand where their anger comes from, rethink the beliefs that lead to that anger, and build solid skills for responding to difficulties in life differently.

  • Cognitive Behavioral (CBT) External link

The science behind psychotherapy is clear: cognitive behavioral therapy is the treatment of choice for many conditions, including depression and anxiety. My training is in this treatment model and I have implemented it in my practice for over 20 years.
