Our Ideal Client

We examine how both your personal history (exposure to chronic stress; presence of diagnoses, etc.), combined with structural trauma/racism and experiences of oppression have impacted who you are, your overall development and current level of functioning. We combine education, historical perspective taking, and center both cultural and therapeutic practices to support growth, change and improved quality of life.

Our Approach to Helping

At Sankofa we do not approach counseling through a lens of pathology. We support you as you deepen your understanding, learn how to have empathy towards yourself and your needs, while also making realistic changes to improve your quality of life. Mental health is holistic – it includes our body, our mind, our thoughts, our emotions, our relationships (etc.), and our sessions together often address these various aspects of life. Our mental health is also directly impacted by the community around us, the ways our family operates, the stigma associated with identities we hold, the experiences of oppression and marginalization we face, the types of stress we experience, the supports we have access to (etc.) We seek to reduce stigma associated with mental health, respond to barriers directly impacting the Black community, and intentionally create opportunities to develop and build upon your current health and resiliency factors.

Techniques I Use

Specialties

  • Attachment Theory External link

I have attended extensive training on attachment as it pertains to brain development and the development of both risk and resilience factors. I hold an advanced certificate in Adoptive and Foster Family Therapy, where major coursework was around attachment processes within various family settings.

Issues I Treat

Specialties

  • PTSD External link

I have extensive training in complex and developmental trauma; particularly as it impacts individual and relational functioning. I approach trauma work from a neurobiological and attachment frame. I provide parent coaching around trauma informed and developmentally appropriate parenting strategies; I work with Portland area schools providing training on trauma informed interventions for educators
