My Approach to Helping

I strongly believe that people have innate capability to overcome even the most difficult and complex mental, psychological and physical problems and find peace, stability and success. My primary focus is helping one connect to the real self and realize this potential within. I believe that an individual possesses the power to utilize their strengths and bring in the needed change. My focus is on strength based therapy and positive psychology. My practice is based on eclectic approach, integrating theories from schema/rational-emotive therapy, Gestalt therapy, cognitive behavioral therapy, dialectical behavior therapy, acceptance and commitment therapy and mindfulness-based techniques. I incorporate systems approach, narratives therapy, emotion focused therapy and Gottman method for couples.

My Personal Beliefs and Interests

I am a qualified, multicultural mental health professional who is passionate about helping people heal and move forward in their life. I earned my degree, Master of Science in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from Portland State University and I have been granted National Certified Counselor certification. I have over three years of experience in helping individuals, couples and families in both inpatient and outpatient setting. My specialties include helping adolescents and adults who have difficulty connecting with others because of daily struggles, such as, extreme sadness, worry, stress or trauma, low self-esteem and assertiveness issues; a broad spectrum of psychological, emotional, physical and spiritual issues with the goal to heal ruptures, reconnect to inner source of wisdom, strengths, and divinity. I am an active volunteer in the SAATHI project of ASHA international, a project focused on helping South Asian Community members dealing with mental health issues.

Techniques I Use

  • Mindfulness-based External link

I believe in mindfulness based practices. It's part of my daily routine. Its empirically proven results include decreased symptoms of stress, anxiety, and depression. It have been shown to improve mood, functionality, quality of life, and reductions in fear of negative evaluation and increased self-esteem and overall satisfaction with life.

  • Emotionally Focused External link

EFT emphasizes creating and strengthening emotional bonds between family members or partners. I have successfully helped individuals identify adaptive and maladaptive relational patterns and develop more open, attuned, responsive, and loving relationships. I like this approach because it helps in addressing the underlying relational disturbance between people suffering from dysregulation.

  • Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) External link

I have strong experiential training in DBT skills for the past 3 years, in a hospital setting. I have successfully worked with individual clients, families and done group therapy with DBT approach. I believe that DBT renders skills to people to manage their emotions, increase interpersonal effectiveness and tolerate distress more effectively.
