My Approach

My approach to therapy is client-centered with attention to creating a supportive and secure therapeutic relationship. I offer evidence-based interventions from a scientific foundation and with an approach of warmth and collaboration. My primary theoretical orientation is cognitive behavioral. I am also trained in and integrate mindfulness-based, interpersonal, and compassion-focused interventions when appropriate. I specialize in working with clients who have difficulties related to the impact of stressful or traumatic events. I also help clients with anxiety, depression, self-esteem, relationship difficulties, and stress from life transitions. Clients may have a specific goal for treatment, feel generally stuck or overwhelmed, or want to focus on personal growth. In all cases, I strive to tailor my approach to best support my clients in connecting with what matters most in their life.

My Background

I earned my PhD in Clinical Psychology from Auburn University in Auburn, AL, with generalist training and specialization in posttraumatic stress disorder. I completed my predoctoral internship at VA Portland Health Care System and postdoctoral fellowship at VA Palo Alto Health Care System. In the past ten years, I have worked in a variety of settings including a community mental health clinic, university counseling center, and outpatient and residential hospital settings. In addition to my clinical experience, I have supervised psychology students in training and published research in the area of traumatic stress. I am also co-founder of Juniper Psychological Services, a small private practice dedicated to providing inclusive and competent psychotherapy from a scientific foundation. Juniper is located in NE Portland in the Alberta Arts District.
