James Clifford

Professional Counselor Intern

Therapy has the power to help people transform how they see themselves and the meaning that they hold in their lives. In 15 years of working with people I have seen these changes happen that led to a deeper sense of connection with others and more trust in themselves.

My Approach

Counseling can be a part of of a holistic move toward making changes that can bring you a life that is more connected, open hearted, and fulfilling. In working with people I provide a safe and nonjudgmental space for you to share openly your heart. In my work with people I combined working with talk therapy, horses, and learning to live mindfully and creatively in order to help you make changes in all areas of your life. As someone that has experienced trauma and helped others move forward I understand what it takes to move through it. I feel that you cannot just change one area of your life and that it is important to understand the whole picture in order to heal and grow.

My Background

I hold a master's degree in rehabilitation counseling from Portland State University where I cultivated my specialty in helping people with trauma and other mental wellness issues lead richer lives. As someone who has served in the Marines and has experienced trauma I have a personal understanding of what it takes to move through it. I enjoy serving other vets as we share a common thread and tend to get each other. past 15 years I have worked in residential treatment centers, vocational training programs, and mental health clinics across the Portland area. To complement my Western education I have a rich background and personal interest in Eastern healing traditions. I have been practicing mindfulness meditation daily for over 25 years and have seen in others and felt in myself the difference that it can make. I have also received Buddhist monastic training from Pema Chodron and I have lead a number of mindfulness meditation groups.
