Ronald Sharrin

Clinical Psychologist

It means a great deal to me to help people feel understood and to find meaning in their lives. I work with adults and young adults facing difficult passages in their lives, couples and groups. I've learned that there is always opportunity in crisis, and development when things feel stuck.

My Approach

After 40 years of experience, I’ve learned to listen to where you need to go instead of where I think you should be. I don’t like to give advice. Generally speaking, my approach is psychodynamic, which means that I look for how we are together as a way of understanding how you are in the rest of your life. This may mean looking at choices you’re making without knowing you’re making them. This is ‘here and now’ but includes dreams and whatever else you choose to bring to our time together. I always assume there’s a deeper intelligence at work, and that psychotherapy is really about finding a relationship to your own wisdom. My additional training includes Intersubjective analysis, attachment theory, mindfulness-based stress reduction, Bio-energetics, Group Relations/Tavistock, and over 45 years of practice and study of Buddhist meditation and psychology. I’ve also been a UCLA assistant clinical professor, organizational consultant, meditation teacher, and a call-firefighter

My Background

I became psychologist because of my interest in Buddhism. Although the insights gained from psychotherapy tend to be different from those gained in meditation, I’ve found that psychotherapy is an absolutely necessary part of my development as a human being. After graduating from Reed College in 1967, I was a VISTA volunteer and then began studying Zen in 1968. I received my PhD from the California School of Professional Psychology in 1976, and was first licensed in 1978. I also received an MA in Religious Studies from the University of California, Santa Barbara, in 2000.
