My Ideal Client

The focus of my training and ongoing study is on how the brain and body hold and sustain negative patterns from past experiences and relationships. We can identify how parts of you might be hanging onto old patterns to keep you safe from things that may no longer be threats, and to explore new choices.

My Background and Approach

I received my Master of Social Work (MSW) from Smith College School for Social Work in 2002. I have worked in a variety of settings including mental health clinics (all ages), cancer counseling with adults, hospital with adults in the medical system, college counseling, and private practice. The focus of my training and ongoing study is on how the brain and body hold and sustain negative patterns from past experiences and relationships. We can identify how parts of you might be hanging onto old patterns to keep you safe from things that may no longer be threats, and to explore new choices. I primarily draw from Internal Family Systems (IFS) and Sensorimotor Psychotherapy. I am Level 2 trained in IFS and Level 1 trained in Sensorimotor Psychotherapy. I incorporate other modalities such as CBT or EMDR (Level 2 trained), as they fit your needs.

My Values as a Therapist

One perspective on how we operate is that every individual has a unique collection of parts made up of experiences, relationships, and biology that contribute to who we are. That collection of variables drives how we relate to our world in the best way we know how. Sometimes our best efforts seem not to work very well and we might feel especially anxious or depressed, or we have relationship struggles, for example. As a therapist, my hope is to help you develop a clear picture of the unique parts that drive you, so you don't feel so out of control. When you know your inner landscape you have a lot more agency over how you relate in the world, and that tends to calm the struggle. My goal is for you to walk away from therapy with a stronger sense of clarity about your strengths and about how to navigate the stuck places.

Specialties

  • Historical Trauma External link

I work with all clients through a trauma-informed lens, which means that I have had in-depth training on how trauma impacts the body, the brain, and how a person relates in the world. I draw from various approaches, primarily Internal Family Systems (IFS), in which I am level 2 trained, and Sensorimotor Psychotherapy, in which I am level 1 trained. I am also level 2 trained in EMDR.

  • Cancer External link

I worked for several years as a Cancer Counselor with oncology patients and their families. I am familiar with many aspects of the cancer process from diagnoses through treatment and post-treatment. I am also experienced in end-of-life decisions and issues of grief and loss.
