My Ideal Client

I believe that people have a choice about their behavior, but they are also a product of their environment and experience, influenced by culture and relationships. I work with my clients to raise awareness of their motivations and goals, and to gain control of their thoughts, emotions, and behaviors. I build a therapeutic relationship with clients based on empathy, curiosity, and respect. I celebrate diversity and I advocate for people from marginalized and oppressed populations.

My Background and Approach

Prior to becoming a counselor, I was an advocate for victims of crime, specializing in domestic violence, sexual assault, and stalking. I have specialized training in the dynamics of abusive relationships and trauma-informed care. I am also passionate about supporting first responders, veterans, social service workers, caregivers, and people who frequently witness or hear about trauma in their professional or personal lives. Additionally, I have been a school counselor so I like working with children and families on social emotional development and working collaboratively within the school system. My theoretical approach to counseling is based on cognitive behavioral therapy with influences from narrative therapy, motivational interviewing and mindfulness. One of my favorite quotes by Maya Angelou summarizes my feelings about counseling: “I’ve learned that people will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel.”

My Personal Beliefs and Interests

My core values are empathy and integrity. I believe that cultivating joy is an important coping skill for self-care and mental wellness. I enjoy reading books, cooking delicious food, being surrounded by nature while hiking or backpacking, and attending or participating in performing arts such as music, dance, and theatre.
