My Ideal Client

If you're struggling with anger, anxiety, depression, or trauma, and/or carrying the weight of being marginalized, you deserve support that helps you trust yourself, move forward, and grow. People who work with me find that over time they feel more connected to themselves and others, more confident, less burdened by emotional and physical symptoms, and more able to make choices that truly reflect what matters most to them.

My Approach to Helping

You may have spent years adapting to painful experiences in ways that once kept you safe, but now leave you feeling stuck, disconnected, or unlike yourself. In our work together, you won't be pushed faster than you're ready to go. You'll be met exactly where you are, in a space that feels safe enough to try new things. Together, we can work toward recognizing and responding to difficult emotions, whether that's feeling numb, overwhelmed, or consumed by anger or anxiety, and understanding how past trauma, whether interpersonal, historical, political and/or military, may be living in your body. Through building real skills and practicing them, you can develop greater resilience, feel more comfortable in your own skin, and begin to experience more freedom from past difficulties so you can be more fully present in your life and relationships.

My Personal Beliefs and Interests

Walking alongside people who have been marginalized has been both my calling and life's work, including serving Veterans, LGBTQIA2S+ people, BIPOC folks, neurodivergent people, women, first-generation college students or graduates, and others navigating the lasting effects of interpersonal, historical, political, or military trauma. As someone who holds intersecting marginalized identities myself, I bring both lived experience and extensive specialized training to this work. With an MSW and MPH from Portland State University, nine years at the Portland VA, and a background in international and domestic human rights and public health work, I understand that healing happens in relationship, that you are the expert on your own life, and that the most effective work is built on trust, open communication, and your feedback. Outside of work, I recharge through music, nature, visual arts, and biking.

Techniques I Use

Specialties

  • Cognitive Behavioral (CBT) External link

Since 2018, I have been certified in Cognitive Processing Therapy for PTSD and am also trained in other CBT methods. These approaches help you explore how adverse or traumatic experiences may be shaping your thoughts and beliefs, and build new ways of relating to them. They are powerful tools for healing, and I adapt them to meet you where you are, moving at a pace that feels right for you.

  • Motivational Interviewing External link

Since 2019, I have been certified in Motivational Interviewing, an approach that can help you explore what truly matters to you and consider making changes that align with your values, rather than staying stuck in ways of doing things that no longer serve you. Together we can work toward a life that feels more authentically yours.

  • Anger Management Therapy External link

I have been serving people who identify anger as a problem in their lives since 2013. I have training in using Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) for Anger and have worked with people on their anger in group and individual therapy settings since 2017. My approach is not to "manage" your anger, but to help you understand where it comes from, what it could be masking, how to move through it without it making your decisions for you, and, most importantly, to live a meaningful life.

  • Prolonged Exposure (PE) Therapy External link

Prolonged Exposure is an evidence-based therapy for PTSD in which I have specialized training. It supports you in gradually processing painful memories in a safe environment, and re-engaging with activities or situations you may have been avoiding since your trauma. Over time, this can dramatically improve your quality of life. As with all my work, I adapt this approach to meet you where you are in your healing journey.

Issues I Treat

Specialties

  • Veterans/Military Service External link

I am not a Veteran myself, but I come from a family with a proud tradition of military service and I work hard to understand the impact of military service and support Veterans and their families to heal. I was privileged to serve at the Portland VA from 2012-2021, where I provided therapy and case management; initiated the LGBTQ+ Veteran Care Coordinator program; and served on the MST Task Force and the Intimate Partner Violence Advisory Board.

  • PTSD External link

I have been serving people impacted by trauma for several decades. Trauma--and how people adapt to it--has been a lifelong focus of mine. I am certified in three trauma-specific modalities: Cognitive Processing Therapy for PTSD, Strength at Home, and TREM (Trauma Recovery and Empowerment) and am trained in Prolonged Exposure, EMDR, and use DBT, ACT, and other mind-body techniques to support people with trauma histories to learn skills to be more calm and present.
