My Background and Approach

My philosophy is there are no two individuals alike nor are two families alike. Therefore, my practice is more integrated utilizing multiple treatment orientation depending on the need of the client. I primarily work through a CBT, psychodynamic lens however; I do like to use other orientation ex. mindfulness, narrative therapy, motivational interviewing, etc. I believe that everyone can benefit from support and that is exactly what I provide. I am a proponent of counseling not because this is the work that I do, but those who attend counseling as a preventative save themselves time and money in the long-run. Simply put, counseling is for us all no matter what stage of life we reside. I employ the idea of us working together and taking a journey that may appear to be rough in the beginning, but the rough places will soon be made straight. As we journey together in agreement there lies hopeful, fulfilled, enlightened road ahead.

My Personal Beliefs and Interests

I am a Portland, Oregon native. I have been working in this field with young people and families for 15 years. I obtain my Master Degree in Social Work, and my undergraduate in Administrative Justice. I am board certified Clinical Social Worker. I have experience in treating Anxiety Disorders, Depression, working with families and clients who have experienced their first episode of psychosis. I have worked extensively with multi-cultured, multi ethnic and disenfranchised families. I have spent many years working with families in the Salem area as an Intensive Services Therapist and in Multnomah County Schools offering individual and family therapy, group work, culturally specific services, trainings and consultations. I am trainer of ASIST (Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training) Youth Mental Health First Aid, and I am certified to do SIPS (Structured Instrument for Prodromal Syndrome) screening. I enjoy seeing families and individuals find hope in the midst of chaos.

Techniques I Use

Specialties

  • Solution Focused Brief Therapy External link

For individuals or families needing to talk about the challenges they are faced with which can be more crisis oriented or time limited will benefit from a more solution focused or problem-solving approach. I work to focus on the challenges at hand rather the past. In addition I work to assist with getting families to their desired goals in their desired time frame.

  • Psychodynamic  External link

I often integrate psychodynamic approach into my sessions to assist with bringing awareness to clients who are often stuck. I believe many things are revealed during a session which is unconscious to the client but is very telling to the therapist. Through careful examination the recognition of these unconscious acts can be very liberating and bring enlightment to client and or family.

  • Cognitive Behavioral (CBT) External link

CBT is one of the most common practiced and evidenced-based therapies among psychotherapies. Following my master's level training in social work I underwent another two years of supervision utilizing this treatment. This therapy is scientific and teaches skills that can be generalized across life situations. This therapy is very powerful to bring desired change in one’s life.

Issues I Treat

Specialties

  • Family Conflict External link

Families inherently have multiple systems and sub-systems. I work with families to help them understand their unique family system, the roles each member plays, and how these roles are interdependent. I like to have families explore and discover their roles and how they are contributors to the overall system and functionality.

  • Self-Esteem External link

I believe that self-esteem plays a huge role in who we are as individuals and how we see ourselves in this world. Individuals struggling with concerns of their self-esteem will journey together with me to uncover where a self-esteem injury occurred, and evaluate how to move past the injury. Through self inventories and discovery a new you will emerge.

  • PTSD External link

This disorder is gaining more recognized and identified in many individuals who have experienced a traumatic event. I have treated many individuals in my years of practice who are in great pain as a result of trauma. I utilize a very empathetic, attentive, and structured approach that creates an environment for healing and recovery for those who knowingly need it and those who are unaware.

  • Anxiety External link

Anxiety is almost inevitable, especially is this fast-paced world that we live in. As a therapist who successfully treats anxiety, I work along side you to bring you to a place of calm, by identifying the source, slowing down the thinking and utilizing grounding techniques. CBT approach is great for allowing your to re-gain control often lost by anxiety.

  • Depression External link

The bulk of my experience has been working with youth and families who are struggling with depression. Depression for young people often looks different in adults. Youth who are acting out at home or school, and is often irritable or angry may be in conflict with feelings of depression. I work with youth and families to identify sources of these complicated feelings and utilize CBT a to treat them
