My Ideal Client

Perhaps my most rewarding work is done with clients who wish to explore their family history and understand how it is impacting them now - the strengths, the challenging patterns. I enjoy working with therapists to help support them while addressing issues that come up in their work with clients. I enjoy working with individuals and couples - gay, lesbian, trans, queer, straight - as they consider or move forward with family-building or face fertility challenges.

My Approach to Helping

I am a Licensed Clinical Social Worker and have been working in Portland since 2015. Sessions are collaborative, focusing first on your strengths and what is going well. Then, as we look at the difficulties you’re facing, we build on those abilities. I encourage listening to your own voice and building confidence as you experience transitions and challenges. You can expect sessions that are supportive, compassionate and sometimes challenging, with a good bit of humor. Using a Family Systems framework we identify how you are shaped by your family of origin and the impact that those patterns and roles play in your current relationships and sense of self. We work on the ability to make connections, create community, strengthen your voice and to expand your passions and interests. Additionally, we can draw upon Sensorimotor Psychotherapy, cognitive behavioral therapy and mindfulness to help support understanding and change.

My Personal Beliefs and Interests

I have lived in Portland since 1997 and attended graduate school at PSU for my Masters in Social Work. I grew up in San Francisco and lived for years in Brooklyn, NY and carry a bit of the sensibility of each of those cities with me.

Techniques I Use

Specialties

  • Family Systems External link

We are all shaped in some ways by the context of our families of origin. As we identify patterns from our families, we have the opportunity to make different choices in our lives now. I find this to be some of the most exciting and fruitful work I engage in as a therapist and therefore I have worked for years with a mentor and consultation group to explore this approach in depth.

Issues I Treat

Specialties

  • Infertility External link

I have experience working with individuals and couples, LGBTQ+ and straight, who are considering choices about parenthood - through pregnancy, reproductive interventions or adoption.

  • Depression External link

Whether depression is new to you or a frequent presence, I work with you using a holistic approach that looks at your current stressors, your history and ways in which you can better care for yourself to help you experience joy and engagement again. I have specialized training in depression and anxiety in pregnancy and postpartum.

  • Loss or Grief External link

There can be so many types of losses - loss of community or job/career, death of a loved one, pregnancy loss (through termination, stillbirth, miscarriage). I allow time for full expression of grief, recognition of all of the losses that are attached to it and then, gradually, the building of meaning, purpose and healing.

  • Cancer External link

I have experience working with clients who have a diagnosis of cancer or other major medical issues. I look to support you in adjusting to this new reality, considering options regarding treatments and increasing your supportive connections with others.
