My Ideal Client

Maybe you have a box in your head that's labeled "Past Stuff." You put in all the things you don't like thinking about: hurts from your childhood, the memories of things you did that play on a loop in your head if you're not careful. Lately, things have been leaking out. You feel less in control of your life, and the memories that used to stay in the box are escaping. Or maybe you know the box is there and have a sense that you should sort through it, but you're not sure about doing it alone.

My Approach to Helping

I am trained in Story-Informed Trauma Therapy, a framework that helps us understand how your story - from birth to the present - informs your experience of life and the choices you make. I also come from a somatic perspective, and we’ll explore how you feel emotions in your body. In therapy, I’ll support you in developing your relationship with your body, your conscious awareness, and the wisdom that you have already inside you. By learning more about ourselves, our beliefs, and the strategies we've relied on to keep ourselves safe, we can begin to build a sense of trust in our selves and our bodies. This process isn't always easy or linear, and my role is to support you by providing presence and a safe relationship where change can occur. I believe you have immense value and a story that is waiting to unfold. It would be an honor and a privilege to sit with you in this next chapter of your life.

More About the People I Treat

Maybe you've thought about going to counseling but then paused because of thoughts like, "But my childhood wasn't that bad. Other people had it worse." Or you might feel that overall, life is going pretty well, even if you dealt with difficult things in the past. Somehow though, you still have symptoms that bother you - restlessness, difficulty in relationships, constant worry, periods of low mood and lack of motivation - and you might not know why. I love to help people not only resolve those symptoms, but help them understand where they come from. The comparison game of "who had it worse" doesn't have to prevent you from tending to the things in your life that were painful. I believe that it's important to understand yourself and your story so that you can experience health to the fullest.

Issues I Treat

Specialties

  • Anxiety External link

While anxiety is a normal part of life, being stuck in a pattern of constant worry, chronic tension, and stress can significantly impact you and the way you live your life. Many people have experienced more anxiety as the result of the pandemic and current world events, so you are not alone! We’ll look at how anxiety is working to protect you, your body, and the things you care about. We will work to learn new coping skills and different ways to tend to those anxious thoughts and sensations.

  • PTSD External link

Trauma occurs when our bodies, brains, and nervous systems don’t have enough resources to cope with what is happening to us. This could be a singular event – for example, being in a car accident - but it can also result from things like a challenging childhood, emotional neglect, or an abusive relationship. Your body may be carrying these past experiences, even if you hadn’t thought of them as traumatic. We'll approach these sensations together so you can begin to experience more freedom.

  • Spirituality External link

Perhaps you’re going through a faith change or deconstructing the belief systems you grew up in. Maybe you’ve recently left a religious community or are in the process of trying to decide whether or not to stay. Going through a major shift can reach far beyond where and how you choose to engage with spirituality; it can impact relationships with family and friends, your identity, even your vocation. We can create a place that’s safe for you to explore questions, doubts, and religious trauma.
