My Ideal Client

Are you wanting to talk about fears that you have? Take a look worries that keep surfacing? Reduce tension that seems to always be below the surface? I love working with clients that experience a range of moods and feelings, yet often feel alone or self-conscious about sharing. Clients will find a space to explore family issues, troublesome patterns, difficulty in moving forward, and the discomfort of shame and embarrassment.

My Approach to Helping

I draw on several important modalities in the work we do together. My foundational training of process oriented work helps enhance a deeper understanding of what may be causing repeated distress and challenging patterns of behavior. I utilize Emotionally-Focused Therapy to help deepen the process of talking about hard topics, while looking for and finding the root causes of distress. I compliment this, when wanted, with cognitive techniques that help reach resolution.

My Personal Beliefs and Interests

I am a licensed professional counselor (LPC), as well as a registered art therapist. I have a master's degree in counseling and art therapy from Marylhurst University. I have many years of professional experience working in community mental health agencies. My clientele included children, adolescents, adults and families. I have completed two levels of training in Emotionally-Focused Therapy, an approach that helps identify root causes and primary emotion. I offer talk therapy for adults focusing on depression, anxiety, shame, faulty communication patterns, wounds from family history, grief, emotional buttons that feel tender and overwhelming, and living in a complicated world.

Techniques I Use

Specialties

  • Couples Counseling External link

I love working with couples to help them reduce the angry 'hot spots' that impede connection. Together, we identify triggers and repetitive patterns, and help find ways to rekindle closeness and intimacy.

  • Emotionally Focused External link

I have formal training in Emotionally-Focused Therapy. This modality has enhanced my ability to help clients see the foundational causes of the emotion that comes to the surface; the root cause is able to be addressed and remedied. I have been able to apply this theory to all of the clinical work I do.

  • Humanistic  External link

This approach looks at some of the obstacles or barriers that may be preventing you from living a life true to yourself. We all have many challenges inherent to life on earth. Knowing yourself more deeply can help shift life goals from "getting by" to honestly reflecting, experiencing authenticity, and feeling regard for yourself and where you want to go.

Issues I Treat

Specialties

  • Anxiety External link

I have many years of experience working with the distress of anxiety and worry. It can feel tiresome and paralyzing to be gripped with worry, even when your logical brain wants to tell you "let it go." There is a ton of advice out there on how to reduce anxiety. Much of it is good! But sometimes you need to find a supportive space to express the worry, and look at ways to alleviate its hold. There are many techniques that can be helpful, and we can being exploring those together.

  • Self-Esteem External link

Many people struggle with some level of self-doubt or a lack of confidence. While not uncommon, it can be very painful to feel you are not good enough, worthy, or too scared to ask for what you need. Through listening, exploring past experiences, and validating what you are going through, you will strengthen the core belief that you are enough.

  • Loss or Grief External link

I have helped clients express grief over the loss of partners, friends, family members, the ability to have a baby, and pets. I have come to learn that grief comes in myriad forms. I maintain safety and expertise in providing a venue for clients to be heard and express the pain of profound loss.
