My Ideal Client

If you and your partner have noticed some distance building, fights getting in the way of your connection, or trust issues suddenly rearing their ugly heads, it might be time for couples therapy. Many couples find themselves lost in the woods from time to time, and a few simple steps can get you back on track. Using Gottman Method Couples Therapy, I teach communication skills, and then guide couples in using those skills to talk through even the hardest of topics.

My Background and Approach

I completed my undergraduate education at Stanford University and my graduate degree at the University of Chicago -- two major research institutions that instilled in me a deep respect for evidence-based practice. As a result, I've trained in one of the gold standard couples therapies: Gottman Method Couples Therapy. Developed by psychologists John and Julie Gottman at a time when couples therapy consisted mostly of "using I-statements" and venting anger, the Gottman Method teaches the actual communication skills shown to bring couples closer together and build intimacy: the skills that can help you talk through anything. Once we've learned the mechanics of what helps couples stay together -- and how to avoid the ways of talking that drive distance and create wounds that are hard to heal -- I help you work through the real issues that are coming up for you. Gottman Method Therapy is designed to get resolution on gridlocked issues quickly and build a relationship full of joy.

More About the People I Treat

The couples I treat are often in times of flux or life-change. Adding a new baby to your family, seeing your "babies" off to college and facing an empty nest, taking on a new job with intensive hours, coping with loss, and undergoing medical treatment are some of the many life changes that can create confusion and crisis for couples. These life inflection points cause roles and routines to change in ways that take adjustment. Other couples come to therapy having found themselves in a place of distance after many years of slow buildup. Raising kids and working full time can eat up time that used to be available for connection, or poor communication habits can develop that drive little bits of distance and resentment to build up over time. And still others seek therapy after a shocking betrayal destroys trust and peace out of the blue. Life is long and complicated. Even the most loving of relationships can fall on hard times and need some support to rebuild friendship and intimacy.
