My Ideal Client

I work with people who feel out of sync with expectations—autistic or ADHD adults, parents of neurodivergent kids, parents of young adults with "failure to launch", parents of children with challenging behavior who are interested in Collaborative and Proactive Parenting Solutions, adults, teens and tweens exploring gender identity, and those whose anxiety makes daily life overwhelming. If you feel alone or constantly struggling to be understood, you’re exactly the kind of client I support.

My Approach to Helping

I use an evidence-based yet intuitive approach to working with people. I have many years of experience, and that helps me to be able to quickly assess how to work with you in a way that works best and helps you to make progress. We laugh together, cry together and grow together. I am direct, which means I say it like it is, I don't sit back and just reflect what you've said. I help you think and feel through what's happening in your life and what you'd like to be different. I help you figure out how you can think and feel differently about your life, so you can change it.

My Values as a Therapist

I am a Licensed Clinical Social Worker in Portland, Oregon. I have a long history of working with people who are on the margins for a variety of reasons. It may be their income, job, neurotype, mental health diagnosis or size. I believe that all people are worthy of love and compassion. We all need support to be our selves. Many people, through no fault of their own, didn't get what they needed in childhood to be great parents or healthy, happy, balanced adults. Throughout my adult life I have felt the need to make sure I help as many people as possible find their true selves, and in so doing, mental wellbeing. I believe strongly in social justice, that all means all, that love is love, and that everyone belongs. Nobody should be hungry or unfed, because there is plenty if we all share. My practice is anti-racist, anti-homophopic and anti-transphobic, body positive and anti-ableist. Let's go on this journey together!

Techniques I Use

Specialties

  • Attachment Theory External link

I have been certified as a court expert in attachment.

  • Mindfulness-based External link

Mindfulness often makes people think of yoga and meditation, and while those can be part of mindfulness, it is so much more. Mindfulness, simply stated, is being present, and being kind. Those 2 simple concepts are very complex ones to apply to parenting (or life in general!).

Issues I Treat

Specialties

  • Adoption Issues External link

I worked as an adoption social worker for 12 years, and also have 3 children through foster care, so I understand both personally and professionally the challenges of adoptive parenting. I also have been certified as an expert in attachment theory and have worked with many children with attachment issues and Reactive Attachment DisorI der.

  • Parenting External link

The basis of my parenting philosophy is a combination of mindful parenting, brain based science, and Collaborative Problem Solving. I blend all three of these philosophies in my practice. Taking into account the age, developmental level and needs of the child, along with the needs of the parent(s), I help you design a style of parenting that best suits your family.

  • Gender Identity External link

I have navigated the journey of gender with each of my children, and helped many parents navigate this journey with their children. I can help you too!

  • Autism External link

I have worked with many people who have been diagnosed with autism later in their lives. This carries with it a special kind of trauma that is in addition to the struggle of being neurodivergent. I know how to work with that and help you navigate and heal from your historical trauma. I also work with parents of autistic children, helping them understand their children's needs and how to parent them.

  • ADHD External link

I have worked with many children and adults with ADHD, helping them to learn to work with their unique brains.
