My Approach to Helping

You may have lost the ability to hope that your relationship can improve, but a better life awaits you. I work with couples in distress, and it is a privilege and an honor. I help my clients reconnect with parts of themselves they feel too afraid to acknowledge and certainly don’t feel comfortable sharing with others. I then work to help you and your partner better understand one another, to truly hear one another and meet one another’s deepest needs. My hope and my belief is that when you can communicate your deepest fears and needs with each other, you can begin to understand one another and love one another in a new, more fulfilling way.

My Personal Beliefs and Interests

Since becoming a counselor I’ve developed a passion to help couples regain connection and a deep sense of contentment and fulfillment with one another. I’ve often been told by couples that I work with that I have a way about me that helps them feel comfortable and capable to be open and deal with the real problems in the relationships. I have extensive experience helping clients with identity formation, largely because I think it is vital to being in a relationship to understand oneself before you can reach out to another. I also have experience working with depression, anxiety, and self-criticism.

Techniques I Use

Specialties

  • Emotionally Focused External link

I view my therapy through an attachment lens. Attachment lays the groundwork for how we will interpret and process the world around us. Utilizing EFT I examine my clients attachment style, identify mismanaged emotions, and develop healthier strategies of coping with negative emotional experiences.

  • Interpersonal External link

As with EFT, interpersonal therapy utilizies an attachment base. Once we understand your attachment style we can then examine the unique ways in which you engage in relationships to meet your needs. We will identify unhealthy interpersonal patterns and work to develop more adaptive techniques to engage in relationships.

Issues I Treat

Specialties

  • Relationship / Marriage Issues External link

Nothing saps the joy from life more than relationship conflict. I love having the opportunity to help couples hear each other, to see the relationship from each other's perspective and recognize the need to work together.

  • Anxiety External link

In working with individuals suffering from anxiety I have found that it is an inability to properly identify and manage the body's emotional experience that leads to the distress. I utilize emotion focused therapy to identify the negative emotional experience and together with the client develop healthier coping strategies to deal with that emotion.

  • Depression External link

I have received training in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) as well as Interpersonal Therapy (IPT), both of which have been shown to be effective in the treatment of depression. By addressing both maladaptive thought patterns and unhealthy interpersonal patterns, we can work to address the unmet attachment needs driving the depression.
