My Ideal Client

Each individual is unique, and every couple has its own ecosystem. I bring a broad overview and understanding as well as an ability to navigate that which is unique and particular, in my work with clients. Experience, insight, passion, care and respect inform my work. Clients report feeling truly seen and heard. I am deeply interested in each person, as well as their individual goals and needs.

My Approach to Helping

There is overlap in psychological approaches, because there is overlap in the basic psychology of all individuals. Every client is different, and different modalities will be better for an individual client’s needs. I will likely use one or two primary modalities. However, there are times when using Cognitive Behavioral modalities may move into working with Internal Family Systems. The reverse is also true. I cannot imagine ignoring the wisdom in the tenets of Family Systems Therapy, as an adjunct to any other modality. In all modalities, Motivational Interviewing may play a helpful role at times, with getting un-stuck. Narrative Therapy can be a capstone, as well as an ongoing, and oft-repeated mantra you will hear from me, though I do not use it as a primary modality. A catharsis is sometimes forgotten. A story is not.

My Values as a Therapist

While I have 16 years of formal education in Psychology, Social Sciences, and Counseling, it is my own personal experience which has given me the greatest ability to also understand what my clients are going through. I believe we bring an added dimension into counseling when we augment formal training with those lessons we’ve learned by having to navigate through our own difficult life experiences. I see couples, families, and individuals, and specialize in helping with attachment, anxiety, depression, trauma, and the stress due to life changes. As your counselor, I will be fully engaged in my work with you, helping you to discover answers and solutions.

Techniques I Use

Specialties

  • Attachment Theory External link

Our attachment style will color the things we believe about ourselves, do not believe about ourselves, or have no solid conception of, about ourselves. They are such a basic building block, that depending on that attachment style, we will see people and relationships through that lens. Attachment affects all of our relationships, and in particular, those with a significant other. Work on this dynamic is very integral, in individual, as well as in couples counseling.

  • Couples Counseling External link

For many couples, a limited number of sessions can significantly untangle issues which have come to an impasse. Communication is generally given as the reason things became so convoluted: feeling unheard, misunderstood, discounted. What may seem abundantly clear to the teller may appear to be unintelligible to the hearer. The right tools can significantly change this dynamic. My number one recommendation: come in at that first significant wound, or as soon thereafter as possible.

  • Coaching External link

I incorporate aspects of coaching into counseling, because so many problems resolve best from a combination of the practical and the psychological. Some problems are purely practical. A new set of eyes can make all the difference. I enjoy the puzzle-solving aspects of tackling difficult decisions and situations. From helping CEO’S design new business models, to incorporating exercise into a client's routine, and everything in between, I enjoy creatively helping clients accomplish their goals.

  • Gestalt External link

I find the use of Gestalt techniques very helpful in using dreams as a way of accessing subconscious material. I employ this with clients who feel stuck, have repetitive dreams, or find it difficult to engage deeply with Internal Family Systems. Clients often report the relaxing and freeing aspect of doing this work. While I do not use this frequently, it is a very helpful adjunct to other modalities.
