My Ideal Client

Hello! I'm so glad you are here. I offer in-person office sessions and teletherapy to individual adults who are facing a range of concerns including life transitions, relationship and family issues, anxiety, and depression. I often focus on supporting clients through life transitions including college aged clients, those working through mid-life concerns, career and family changes, cancer diagnosis and survivorship and grief and loss.

My Background

Welcome to my practice. I am so glad you are here! My name is Arah, and I am a Professional Counselor Associate based in Portland, Oregon. I received my Master’s degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from Portland State University. My training included work in community counseling and university counseling clinics, and I have served as an adult group facilitator supporting grieving families. I bring to this work a passion for providing a warm, accepting environment where I hope you will feel safe, seen and cared for. Some things you may be interested to know about me: I am an Oregon native who spent many years on the East Coast. I am a cancer survivor, and before I became a counselor, I had careers in international economic development and business & technology.

My Approach to Helping

My counseling style is compassionate and accepting, and I am curious about what it’s like to be you in the world. I strongly believe that you are the expert on you and that, once given a little time to breathe in a safe space, you will begin to connect to important parts of yourself that will enable healing and growth. I will be your partner in this process, helping you to gain fresh insight, feel self-compassion, and see your strengths. My counseling approach is rooted in person-centered, attachment-based therapy. I believe that an authentic, trusting relationship between counselor and client is the foundation for change and serves as a powerful launching pad for exploring specific therapeutic strategies and skills that best fit with your intentions, hopes and goals. I often incorporate emotion-focused therapy and Internal Family Systems therapy into my work. I find emotional awareness can be a powerful catalyst for change.

Techniques I Use

Specialties

  • Emotionally Focused External link

I often work from an Emotion Focused Therapy perspective. Through this approach, we work together to deepen awareness of emotions, feelings and experiences that might be getting in your way, or making you feel stuck. Exploring these emotions in a safe space with deep compassion, can often be very meaningful and freeing, allowing for new insights and renewed sense of grounding, and peace in how you want to be in the world.

  • Internal Family Systems (IFS) External link

I often work from an Internal Family Systems perspective. This really just means that I welcome all the contradictory parts of a person that may show up in navigating life's struggles. We work together to understand both the parts you know well and the parts that you might often try to avoid. Better understanding all the parts of yourself, and having compassion for them can be a powerful first step in healing, finding peace and a path forward.

Issues I Treat

Specialties

  • Anxiety External link

Anxiety can show up differently throughout our lives. Life transitions, age, stress, specific events can all impact it's intensity. Sometimes we don't immediately recognize the part our anxiety is playing in our life challenges. I believe that it is important to understand the shape and nature of your anxiety, and to learn specific techniques that support you in moving through it when it gets in your way, as well as to build compassion for yourself and your experience of anxiety.

  • Self-Esteem External link

We all have the innate desire and capacity for growth and change, however, we sometimes get in our own way. Looking at the world through a lens of self-doubt or feelings of inadequacy are a significant stumbling block for many of us. I will support you in gaining insight into the origins of these beliefs you might hold about yourself. Practices of self-awareness and self-compassion are often a central part of tapping into your strengths, and rediscovering your sense of worth.

  • Relationship / Marriage Issues External link

I work with individuals who are struggling in some way in their current relationship. In these struggles we often find ourselves in a rut of thinking and a rut of communicating. In therapy my hope is to provide you a safe and non-judgmental space to connect to your own values, emotions and desires to help you gain more insight into your authentic path both in this relationship and in life.

  • Adjustment Disorder External link

Changes in family and relationships, moves, job or health changes, death of a loved one, and other life events can be difficult times of transition, leaving us feeling unmoored, questioning things that once felt certain. These can be painful times, and often also create opportunities for personal growth, a way to potentially move closer to your authentic self and hopes for your own life. I will support you in finding your strength and discovering your path forward.

  • Loss or Grief External link

Each person's experience of loss is unique. There is no "right" way to grieve, however it can feel overwhelming and isolating to navigate this journey. My hope is to support you in creating a safe space to experience your grief in a healing way, and to support you in whatever healing looks like for you. It often feels like we are told to move past, or get over our loss. The real work is perhaps to find a way to transform our lives to hold space for our loss in a sustainable way.
