My Ideal Client

Did you experience childhood trauma and find that it still impacts you? Do you struggle to understand what your emotions are trying to tell you? Are you facing an overwhelming life transition? My ideal client may come to therapy with any of these concerns. What makes someone my ideal client is their willingness to show up, be authentic, remain curious, and engage in the challenging, messy, and rewarding work of self-discovery.

My Approach to Helping

I believe that our early life experiences profoundly shape us, in ways that can be both healthy and unhealthy. I also believe that we can reveal our patterns, expose our pain, and heal our wounds, allowing us more choice in how we think, feel, and act. My aim is to help you explore your authentic self, enrich your relationships, and embrace life’s transitions. My approach is person-centered and honors you as the expert of your own experiences and goals. I incorporate Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, a mindfulness-based orientation that helps you create a more fulfilling life by encouraging you to live in alignment with your values. I also use attachment theory to examine patterns of love and trust in families. My background as a Registered Dietitian Nutritionist taught me to value Health at Every Size® and intuitive eating and sparked my passion for helping individuals struggling with negative body image and a dysfunctional relationship with food.

My Personal Beliefs and Interests

I embarked on a second career in counseling because I believe in the healing power of therapy. I believe therapy works because it has worked for me. I also believe that every individual or couple who sits with me deserves my full attention and nonjudgmental kindness. My goal is to provide compassionate care to all clients, regardless of any identities or experiences we may or may not share. I strive to provide affirming care to clients who belong to the LGBTQ+ community and a size-inclusive space to clients living in larger bodies. My roots are in Oregon. I was born and raised on the Oregon coast and have lived most of my adult life in Portland. My husband and I have one son in college, two dogs, and lots of dreams for future travels. My happy place is an afternoon nap with one (or two) dogs curled up next to me. I enjoy tennis, podcasts, freshly baked cookies, strong coffee, and even stronger relationships.

Issues I Treat

Specialties

  • PTSD External link

I work with clients who suffered trauma that left a lasting imprint on their lives. Many of my clients experienced childhood or adolescent trauma in the form of abuse or neglect, significantly impacting their sense of safety, security, and self-worth. I help clients understand the effects of trauma on the body and mind, process traumatic memories, build emotional regulation skills, and foster post-traumatic identity development.

  • Women's Issues External link

I have a helpful understanding of a variety of women's issues. These include physical health concerns such as pregnancy and postpartum care, infertility, and menopause, as well as current sociocultural challenges facing women. I am passionate about supporting women find balance and incorporate self-care amid the seemingly never ending demands of family, school, career, and community.

  • Relationship / Marriage Issues External link

Being in a healthy relationship takes dedication, effort, and a commitment to evolve together. I work with couples who find themselves needing a neutral space in which to improve communication, explore conflicts, or reconnect. My approach to relational counseling is transparent, truthful, and, at times, directive. I incorporate attachment theory, recognizing that our early life experiences of love and trust profoundly impact how we show up in our romantic relationships.

  • Body Image Issues External link

I approach body image issues through an examination of the roles of historical oppression, cultural messages, and internalized weight/size bias. My goal is to help clients shift from negative body image to body acceptance through activities and discussions designed to address root causes and explore personal growth. I recognize that negative body image can impact anyone, and that vulnerability increases in pregnancy/postpartum period, perimenopause, illness or injury, and among TGNC individuals.

  • Eating Disorder External link

My understanding of eating disorders is informed by my background as a Registered Dietitian Nutritionist and my current career in mental health counseling. I appreciate the nuances of disordered eating, recognizing that a client's eating disorder serves a purpose, however destructive it may be. My goal is to help clients learn the function of their eating disorder, address core conflicts, and build helpful skills. I see medically stable clients with binge eating disorder and bulimia.
