My Ideal Client

Whether you are brand new to therapy or have experience engaging in therapy, I work to help you feel comfortable and confident in your decision to address the things in your life that you want to change or improve. I work with clients on a wide variety of issues including depression, anxiety, life transitions, relationship issues and stress management. I specialize in working with people who identify in the LGBT community.

My Approach to Helping

I believe that we are all searching for ways to lead fulfilling lives, but sometimes we struggle to find the things that will help sustain us or the obstacles of life can begin to feel overwhelming. As a therapist, I help to identify the things that nourish each individual and act as a partner in learning strategies for moving through the difficult times. I believe that counseling is most effective when the client and the counselor collaborate on identifying individual strengths and opportunities for growth. This collaboration allows for the creation of a more vibrant life experience for the client. I believe that it is important to use treatments and techniques that have been carefully researched and found effective, so I take an evidence-based approach to therapy. I utilize an eclectic approach that draws heavily on cognitive behavioral therapy.

My Personal Beliefs and Interests

I hold a masters degree in Counseling Psychology from Pacific University, where I gained a strong foundation in assessment and diagnosis, individual counseling, group dynamics, and human development. I have a bachelor's degree in Psychology from Arizona State University, where I focused on human sexuality and learning and motivation. I have received specialized training in working with the LGBTQ community, and have significant experience working with LGBTQ identity issues, gender affirmation, and gender transition. My clinical experience has included group and individual work with children, youth, and adults in residential, outpatient, community based, and mandated settings.

Techniques I Use

Specialties

  • Cognitive Behavioral (CBT) External link

My graduate training focused on learning and practicing CBT with individuals and groups. I believe that thoughts, feelings, and actions are connected and influence one another. I use CBT to help identify and target specific thoughts, feelings, or behaviors that are problematic and work to disengage the cycle of negative influence then replace it with a more adaptive pattern.

  • Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) External link

DBT is an evidence-based practice that teaches people a set of skills to help them handle difficult situations, create stronger relationships, get their needs met effectively, and balance reason and emotion. I have been trained in DBT and utilize it often with people who have difficulty managing their emotions, struggle with interpersonal relationships, or engage in self harm or substance abuse.
