My Ideal Client

Therapy can be a revitalizing experience where, together, we can unpack our worries, listen to our bodies, and practice tools for calming and centering when difficult issues arise. I have years of experience working with families in crisis and transitions and am confident in my abilities to listen and find ways to heal that work individually with your needs.

My Approach to Helping

Xan has multiple degrees in Theatre Arts and yoga and has decades of experience working in home caregiving. Working with various populations like incarcerated women, domestic violence, and vulnerable youth Xan has life experience that you cannot go to school for. Through studying the arts Xan knows the power firsthand of sharing your story. Therapy sessions with the right fit of client to counselor can be full of fun and emotional exploration. Sharing stories of deep-seated secrets frees our internal pressure of "doing things right" and we can start showing up for ourselves including regulating our bodies and nervous systems. Xan herself experienced wanting to be seen as "normal," whatever "normal" is since she can remember. Everyone is unique and deserves to be listened to deeply in a judgment-free space.

My Personal Beliefs and Interests

I became a counselor after years of fellow students and clients generously sharing all of their grief and heartache on the stage. Looking around the room at my fellow teachers and performers, I thought to myself, "Who is in charge here?" How does the healing continue after they leave the stage, workshop, and classroom? I am a firm believer in the arts in education and the power of play! I have a radio show All My Greatest Teachers Showed Me Love, that you can stream on KBOO.fm/love. I truly love helping people learn to find what they love to do that involves community. Learning to love yourself and find more compassion and curiosity is the recipe for success. Xan lives with her adopted shelter cat Merlin, who teaches her daily the power of love can heal the most traumatic circumstances.

Techniques I Use

Specialties

  • Holistic External link

Xan believes in a holistic, mindful, body-centered approach to counseling. Learning the language of our bodies and being aware of when we are dysregulated is paramount to learning to love ourselves and accessing the support we need from within. Through various exercises with the body, discussing the foods we put into our bodies, we can explore what works uniquely for you.

  • Mindfulness-based External link

Mindfulness is just a fancy way of saying "paying attention." It is something that those of us who live with shame and dissociation can learn to "welcome ourselves back" instead of being critical when we find our minds waundering.

  • Somatic Therapy (Body Centered) External link

Everything starts in the body. Finding hobbies and ways to be in a playful state with your body is key. Relearning what it means to play and build a relationship with your body and moving trauma and pain through instead of "wishing it would go away."

  • Relational  External link

Issues I Treat

Specialties

  • Depression External link

The opposite of depression is connection. Even with the step of finding the right counselor, we can begin to notice that depression is something we do, and we can learn to undo it. You are not your depression!

  • Anxiety External link

Anxiety is usually spinning thoughts, and if we notice and get up and do something that includes bilateral stimulation, it can easily shift, and we find ourselves more and more in the moment, living life.

  • Loss or Grief External link

Loss and grief is not only when you lose someone in death. We can face daily loss from feelings of being in the wrong situations or relationships that no longer serve us. Exploring ways to communicate with others can support this acceptance of what is and the power to change what we can.
