My Approach to Helping

Welcome to a holistic approach to mental health. I offer individual counseling and bodywork sessions to address developmental trauma, PTSD, stress, anxiety, depression, addictions, chronic pain/auto-immune disorders, and spiritual/energetic issues. My approach uses somatic (body-centered) awareness and mindfulness as a way to enhance traditional talk therapy and draws from the wisdom traditions of yoga and Buddhism, the biodynamic field of the human energy system, and somatic psychotherapy. I look forward to accompanying you on a journey of healing and transformation.

My Personal Beliefs and Interests

As both a licensed professional counselor and a licensed massage therapist, I deeply value the strength of including the mind, body, and spirit in healing. I have worked in the mental health field since 2001 in a variety of settings, including psychiatric, drug treatment, and youth corrections. After attending massage therapy school to pursue a career in the healing arts, I realized how powerful both mind and body therapies are for holistic healing. I have specialized training in somatic psychotherapy and craniosacral therapy, as well as an extensive yoga and meditation practice which greatly influences my work. Master of Arts in Counseling Psychology, Addictions Studies, Lewis and Clark College, 2007 Graduate of East West College of the Healing Arts, 2009 Licensed Professional Counselor #C3164 (Oregon) Licensed Massage Therapist #17024 (Oregon) Somatic Experiencing Practitioner Certificate

Techniques I Use

Specialties

  • Somatic Therapy (Body Centered) External link

Somatic Experiencing-- This type of therapy views the body as a source of wisdom and a path to healing and self-awareness. It uses mindfulness as a way to study present experience, the holding patterns in our physical form, and the core beliefs that shape us. When we are aware of our patterns, it frees us to live more full, authentic lives. This approach is non-pathological and recognizes that people are always seeking wholeness.

  • Mindfulness-based External link

As both a licensed professional counselor and a licensed massage therapist, I greatly value the strength of addressing both the mind and the body in healing. My approach uses body awareness and mindfulness as a way to enhance traditional talk therapy and includes breathing exercises, guided meditation, EMDR, yoga, and craniosacral therapy in sessions.

  • EMDR External link

EMDR uses eye movements to process information and memories of traumatic events, as well as has a calming effect on a stressed nervous system. The eye movements are thought to mimic the process of REM sleep while dreaming and appears to be crucial to organizing experience in an adaptive manner. When trauma disrupts this system, EMDR can help.
