My Approach to Helping

Research shows that the most important predictor of success in therapy is the quality of the relationship between therapist and client. My top priority is to create a safe space for you to be able to be real, to show up fully in your stuckness and your pain. As a systemically-oriented counselor, I recognize that we are all doing the very best we can to survive, but sometimes our ways of going about it may cause harm to those around us, including our very selves. I see therapy as a process of accessing new pathways for interaction; this is freedom. I meet people on the common ground of our shared humanity, in a collaborative partnership designed to empower YOU. While I may hold some expertise in the areas of individual and couples counseling, YOU are the expert in your own life. I have deep respect for the human capacity for growth and healing, and I consider it a most high honor to participate in someone else's growth/change process. Basically, I have the best job ever!

My Values as a Therapist

I believe it is important to walk the talk. I've been engaged in my own intensive personal growth work for more than two decades. People who have worked with me appreciate my highly attuned presence, to which I attribute a daily meditation practice that enables me to show up fully present in all areas of my life and work. I'm trained in couples, marriage, and family therapy, so I work holistically and systemically with both individuals and couples. I practice culturally-sensitive counseling with all types of people, including straight, gay, queer, trans, non-binary, poly, and kink. I hold credentials as a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist, a Licensed Professional Counselor, a Nationally Certified Counselor, and a Certified Alcohol and Drug Counselor. I've been counseling people with a variety of issues since 2015.

Techniques I Use

Specialties

  • Emotionally Focused External link

Emotionally Focused Therapy has been my primary modality in working with couples since 2015. I find it a most beneficial therapeutic modality because it enables me to help couples get right down to the root of what's happening in problematic interactions. Using EFT helps me help couples much more quickly because we work with the shared human experience of emotions rather than staying in the story.

  • Internal Family Systems (IFS) External link

IFS is my primary modality for individual counseling because it is both highly effective and relatively easy for most people to work with, across a range of issues. It can help bring clarity to all the myriad parts of a complex human being dealing with complex life issues. I find that IFS also supports differentiation of self, which is key to personal freedom and relationship success.

  • Couples Counseling External link

As a counselor trained specifically in couples, marriage, and family therapy, I specialize in relationship counseling with all types of couples, including straight, gay, queer, trans, non-binary, poly, and kink. I use a variety of proven modalities with couples to support each unique relationship. Past clients have appreciated my ability to make them feel safe to explore what's really going on.

Issues I Treat

Specialties

  • Relationship / Marriage Issues External link

As a counselor trained specifically in couples, marriage, and family therapy, I specialize in relationship counseling. I support couples from the early stages in premarital counseling, all the way through the lifecycle of a relationship, potentially including divorce counseling.

  • Personal Growth External link

If you are looking to increase your insight and become more real, more present in your life, we might be a good fit for each other. I'm passionate about growth work! I have focused much of my individual counseling work on introspection and meaning-making, supporting clients who are not just seeking symptom relief, but seeking to thrive.

  • Loss or Grief External link

Life is full of loss, and no two losses are ever the same. I work with individuals moving through the grief process by providing a safe place to be in pain. I will support you in being exactly where you are in the moment, fully exploring your experience and all the existential issues that arise in the face of loss. I facilitate grief groups and so know firsthand what tends to support healing.

  • LGBTQ Issues External link

I love working with members of the queer community, including individuals as well as couples who identify as gay, lesbian, bisexual, queer, trans, non-binary, poly, and kink. Although times are changing, queer voices are still silenced in our culture, so my office provides a safe space. I have years of experience and specialized training in cultural competency specific to the LGBTQ population.

  • Alcohol Abuse and Alcohol Dependence External link

As a Certified Alcohol and Drug Counselor (CADC I), I have training and experience working with addiction/recovery from a holistic, relational perspective. Addiction is often a problem of connection, so I support people struggling with addiction/recovery by taking into account the history and relationships that impact choices, and by working to uncover the shame that often maintains the cycle.
