My Ideal Client

The choice to turn to therapy is a brave decision that I am eager to honor with compassion and curiosity. I specialize in working with individuals, couples, and families tarrying with the trials of existence. Why inner peace diminishes varies for us all, and cultivating or maintaining harmony and connection can feel so distant an endeavor. We want to restore more levity, clarity, and purpose to our lives but sometimes struggle to perceive what needs to be addressed and worked with.

My Background and Approach

My approach is integrative of both behavioral therapies and internal family systems (IFS), bringing clients to perceive their emotions in the contexts in which they occur, their unique evolution and how they work in dynamism with other relationships in which they are embedded. Here, we can begin to work on cultivating space, identifying strengths, and collaborating on strategies of growth. Cultivating self-empathy, awareness, and inner strength can be a rewarding journey, like someone’s slowly turning the internal lights up a little brighter. However, its rarely an easy one but the gifts that therapy imparts can be transformative. My journey to this profession is ultimately rooted in humility and curiosity that has been influenced by a multicultural background, deep schooling in philosophy and global studies, previous work as an international professor and writer, husband and father, which I hope to connect to your own journey.

Why I Became a Therapist

I was born to working class immigrants from the middle east in a midwestern city. The challenges of cultural assimilation external to our family system while fulfilling our cultural roles internally imparted a deep education and curiosity about virtually every aspect of the self, with special emphasis on communication. This curiosity followed me through a masters and doctoral education in communication and philosophy, that eventually led to professorships abroad, where I worked in East Asian universities for ten years. I've gratefully facilitated classes for students of all walks of life, religions, sexual orientations, ages, socio-economic backgrounds, and always found the counseling aspect of the position especially rewarding. However, during this time, the experience of sudden loss drove me to my own experience with therapy. The education and recovery was revelatory of what I wanted to evolve into. And here I am, hoping to build upon the experiences and education with you!
