My Approach to Helping

My counseling style is one based on empathy. Empathy is healing. It’s empowering. And it provides a space free from judgement where we can go beneath the surface of a problem and explore its depths. Weeding out the root of a problem is how to create real transformation and revolutionary change I have a double Masters degree in Counseling and also in the the field of Sociology. My education has given me a unique perspective to explore with both a micro and a macro lens. I seek to know my clients as novel individuals with their own unique experiences. And to also understand them within the context of their cultural and societal backgrounds. My theoretical orientation includes narrative therapy, depth psychology, attachment studies, and family systems. I tailor my approach based on each client’s needs and wants, incorporating different behavioral, cognitive, or emotional interventions as suits each individual person.

More About the People I Treat

As a fellow Empath and Highly-Sensitive Person, I understand the hardships us Empaths face. I understand the struggle to create healthy boundaries. The overactive caretaking of others to the point of fatigue. The chronic perfectionism and believing we are never doing enough. The endless chain of relationships with people exhibiting narcissistic behavior. That’s why I’ve created Focused Therapy to address the above issues and to empower you to heal, grow, and ultimately thrive.

Techniques I Use

Specialties

  • Depth Therapy External link

Depth therapy provides the basis of my orientation because it's the beneath the surface and in the depths that real change is made.

  • Attachment Theory External link

I have researched attachment theory and utilize its theories in most of my therapy interventions, particularly on issues of family systems, relationships, trauma, and boundaries.

  • Narrative  External link

Narrative therapy enriches my counseling techniques by: bringing in elements of larger societal narratives impacting clients; allowing the clients space to tell and oftentimes rewrite their own story; and providing a creative space for metaphor, imagery, and exploration.

  • Emotionally Focused External link

While I also use CBT often, I always pair it with Emotionally Focused Therapy because it allows a more well-rounded approach and links together the cognitive with the emotional spheres of a client's experience.

  • Family Systems External link

Family Systems is all about recognizing how a person impacts and is impacted by the systems within which they interact - starting with their family of origin and extending into larger societal systems.

Issues I Treat

Specialties

  • Anxiety External link

I have worked with clients of all ages on issues of anxiety. Especially after the past year, it's safe to assume that everyone is experiencing some level of it. And yet, anxiety can show up in a myriad of ways: panic, fear, insomnia, low self esteem, chronic perfectionism, or that constant sinking feeling that everything is on the verge of falling apart. I offer a unique counseling method that seeks to address the symptoms of anxiety as well as discovering the root causes.

  • Depression External link

Depression can look and feel a number of ways. It can be the lack of motivation to get anything done. Or the overall numbness to all or any emotions. It could also be nearing the edge of feeling like you can't take it anymore. I offer empathic counseling for people struggling with depression. However, if we don't make a good fit, I'm also happy to offer referrals to other counselors. My main goal is that you get the care you need.

  • Abuse External link

I specialize in treating clients who have experienced narcissistic abuse over their lifetime. The term narcissistic abuse is used to categorize the way a person experiences emotional abuse and manipulation when in a relationship with someone exhibiting narcissistic behavior. This “relationship” does not necessarily have to pertain to a romantic partner. It could also be with a family member, a friend, a coworker, or any other important relationship that is impacting your life.

  • Codependency External link

As a recovered codependent, I understand the struggles of codependency. And I also truly believe in our power to heal from it. Codependency can sometimes be hard to spot and a person can quickly fall into a codependent relationship without realizing. I offer a counseling program called Focused Therapy that helps to address issues of codependency along with skill-building techniques to cultivate awareness and eventually bring about healthy connection with others.

  • Compassion Fatigue External link

Caretaking is an act of love. But the yang to this beautiful yin is that sometimes you care and tend so much to others, that there’s nothing left over for yourself. This can make you feel burnt out, fatigued, drained, and possibly even resentful. That’s when caretaking can become overactive. I offer a Focused Therapy program to bring some focus back to you. You deserve to heal, to spend some energy on yourself, and to fill your own cup so you can get back into the world refreshed & renewed.
