My Ideal Client

For the questioner, the creative, the person who lives in grays and finds it challenging to live in a world of black and white thinking. Whether navigating a life transition, contending with issues around identity, or feeling disconnected from your own voice, I offer space for you to speak to whatever you need-- to take hold, to let go, to laugh about, to cry with... I believe in the power of metaphors; through images we can create much needed life perspective.

My Background and Approach

Drawing from my studies in narrative and client-centered therapy, and from mindfulness practices and the arts, I facilitate the process of uncovering those parts of your story that bring you back to your embodied self. I invite the paradoxes of being human into session, while holding room for contradictions to co-exist and converse. I create an environment of gentle curiosity. I seek to learn about your identity as it relates to your larger community context and believe that the people, places, and things we interact with daily have great influence. Together, we attune to the heart of your goal, to clarify what is the next most meaningful step and how best to move forward.

My Approach to Helping

Therapy is one place to connect with what is most real and urgent in your life. Engaging in your own healing in this collaborative space can offer you greater connection to your own knowing. Through working together relationally, I support your development toward more integrated ways of seeing yourself. I work within the understanding that there is no separation between the mind-body and believe that all emotions can become allies once we learn to understand their contribution and regulate their energy.

Techniques I Use

Specialties

  • Holistic External link

When we talk holistically about what is going on in therapy, we see that the mind is a culmination of all convergences in that moment: the physical, the emotional, the transcendent, all of which are living in this hour, this time of day, this season, this year, this era. It is my aim to create a space that holds room for all of these aspects and to invite space for meaningful reflection and conversation, which can illuminate that which has been waiting to be called out and seen into.

  • Humanistic  External link

From a humanist lens, each person has an inherent, basic goodness. It is within this frame that I work with you, to reflect back your brilliance, to find a sustainable balance between holding your potential in sight while also holding compassion around your humanity. Here, we acknowledge that while I am the expert in facilitating our process in the therapy hour, you are the expert on your life, and I am here to witness and attune to that which you feel most moved to express.

  • Mindfulness-based External link

Drawing from my background in meditation and the arts, I hold a space that invites you to be mindful of what may arise. This is about identifying with your witness, the one who can observe the thoughts, the feelings, the physical sensations. And then through this seeing, more space organically unfolds, to hold what was formally too hard to bear. And it is through this holding, this seeing, that you can see what needs to be acknowledged, celebrated, kept, mourned, let go of...

  • Narrative  External link

We are born on stories; stories from our ancestors, stories we hear from family, friends, culture-- stories we tell ourselves. It is through these narratives that we form a sense of self. And it is this sense of self that continues to author our lives. Therapy is a place where I hold space for you to curiously, compassionately, observe your storyline and decide whether this story is working or needs to be rewritten in certain aspects, toward whatever it is that you most want to cultivate.

  • Somatic Therapy (Body Centered) External link

While it can feel as if the mind is a disembodied form, it is physical too. By paying attention to how our thoughts impact our sensing selves, we can learn about how we hold experiences in our body. In witnessing the flow of experience in these multi-layered ways and from different vantage points, we find we have many ways to engage in our healing. Because our senses are interconnected, we find we have more spaciousness to work with what formerly felt impossible.

Issues I Treat

Specialties

  • Adjustment Disorder External link

Adjustment disorder relates to the challenges that can arise with change. Life transitions range from events as small as navigating how you start your day, to attending a new social meet-up, to changing jobs, to moving to another country. Together, we can look at your relationship to change and compassionately observe your current outlook. From there, we can co-create a new narrative that makes room for the changes that you most desire to live out.

  • Anxiety External link

We experience a certain amount of healthy anxiety that motivates us to care about the various aspects of our lives. It is when anxiety becomes more intense than a situation warrants, that we may seek additional support. I hold calm, curious space to identify what priorities in your life may have been neglected. Once we can learn how anxiety may have been displaced as a result of these neglected priorities, we can re-organize the importance given to each life aspect in support of your wellbeing.

  • Compassion Fatigue External link

Compassion fatigue arises when you extend beyond the capacity of what you are able to sustainably give. Whether on a personal or professional level, awareness of when and how your own limitations have been exceeded is important. Therapy can be a place where you recenter around parts of yourself that have been consciously or unconsciously neglected. In recentering, you can offer yourself the opportunity to replenish your reserves and learn how to be of service in ways that support self and other.

  • Self-Esteem External link

Low self-esteem may emerge when you have not had enough affirmative reflection of your own strengths, especially over a long spell of time. Therapy can be a place where you can rediscover and reclaim these strengths, and it is my aim to remind you of your light by reflecting your genius back to you. In this space, I can facilitate your process in identifying, externalizing, and letting go of self-talk that does not support you in living your most fulfilled life.

  • Depression External link

Depression can occur when you feel you don't have the energy to continue. It can be at its best a respite from the burnout of being disappointed too many times. In feeling and talking your way through what it is that causes you to feel collapsed, withdrawn, or hopeless, we can uncover the shapes and textures of what holds you back. Collaboratively, we can create a new life map that gives you hope in taking the next steps towards opening to the opportunities available.
