My Approach to Helping

My practice is guided by the belief that every adult and child strives to do the best they can. The individual or family system may need assistance in developing necessary skills and guidance in solving problems. Working collaboratively with clients I help them to narrate new ways of interacting with their environment.

My Personal Beliefs and Interests

I was born and raised in Oregon, and have spent several years overseas in the UK, Europe, and Africa. I have Master's degrees from Lewis & Clark College in Counseling Psychology and from University of Cambridge in Social and Developmental Psychology. I completed my undergraduate work in Psychology, also at Lewis & Clark in Portland. I have worked as a counselor since 2002, first as a Professional School Counselor in the US and overseas, and then in the private sector since 2011. Additionally, I spent two years working as a Behavior Consultant for children in a large public school district in Oregon. I have additional training in Interpersonal Neurobiology, EMDR, Somatic therapy, developmental/attachment trauma, Collaborative Problem Solving, and Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports.

Techniques I Use

Specialties

  • EMDR External link

I am trained in EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing), which is an evidence based treatment for PTSD as well as several other concerns (e.g., developmental/attachment trauma, phobias, addiction, anxiety).

  • Attachment Theory External link

I have and continue to participate in graduate education and professional development that focuses on attachment and attachment related trauma. I continue to participate in graduate classes through Portland State University's Trauma Informed Services and Interpersonal Neurobiology (IPNB) programs and participate in an advanced study group focusing on trauma, attachment, and IPNB.

  • Gottman Method External link

I am a Gottman Seven Principles trained educator, a Gottman Bringing Baby Home trained educator, and have completed the Gottman Level 1 couples training.

Issues I Treat

Specialties

  • Parenting External link

I hold a masters degree in Social and Developmental Psychology - my thesis research focused on parent-child communication and conflict. I have additional training in Collaborative Problem Solving, Positive Interventions and Supports (PBIS), and Interpersonal Neurobiology (the brain/mind/relationship connection).

  • PTSD External link

We know a lot more than we did only decades ago about how trauma is stored in the brain and body, about how it is activated by present experiences, and how to effectively process and integrate traumatic memories. I utilize EMDR, somatic techniques and Interpersonal Neurobiology to assist clients with trauma.

  • Child or Adolescent Issues External link

I am trained in Collaborative Problem Solving and have had several years of experience working with children and adolescents - ages 3-20 both in and out of the school setting. I have worked within the Special Education system and can assist families with what is an often confusing process. I use art and play techniques, interactive activities and include parents and other family members in therapy

  • Relationship / Marriage Issues External link

I am a Gottman Seven Principles and Bringing Baby Home trained educator and have completed the Gottman Level 1 couples training. Additionally, I have and continue to participate in graduate education and professional development in Interpersonal Neurobiology (IPNB). I incorporate the Gottman Method, IPNB, and Emotion Focused Therapy (EFT) in my work with couples.
