Why I Became a Therapist

I found psychotherapy as a teenager and it changed the course of my life. I happened to be gifted the referral to a wise older woman therapist named Melody who had an office down the street from my high school. I saw her for four years (and have since done many years of psychotherapy). What Melody and I explored about my inner world and outer world was incredibly inspiring, comforting and bolstering of my sense of self. After working with Melody for four years, I knew I wanted to become a psychotherapist and pursued an undergraduate degree in psychology (2005) and then a masters degree in counseling psychology (2008). I greatly enjoy accompanying individuals as they seek to understand their own feelings, motivations, unconscious attitudes/aspects of themselves as they seek to become more whole.

Techniques I Use

Specialties

  • EMDR External link

    Attachment and somatic based EMDR.

  • Sensorimotor External link

Sensorimotor Psychotherapy draws from somatic therapies, neuroscience, attachment theory, and cognitive approaches, as well as from the Hakomi Method. It is successful in treating trauma, attachment issues, limiting beliefs/cognitions, patterned intense emotion and in developing/restoring parts of the personality.

  • Psychodynamic  External link

An approach that helps people understand how their past experiences and unconscious mind influence their current feelings and behaviors. I am influenced by contemporary psychodynamic and Jungian approaches.

  • Internal Family Systems (IFS) External link

An approach to psychotherapy that identifies and addresses sub-personalities/families within each person’s mental system. These sub-personalities consist of wounded parts and painful emotions such as anger and shame, and parts that try to control and protect the person from the pain of the wounded parts. The sub-personalities are often in conflict with each other and with one’s core Self. I also utilize Janina Fisher's Trauma Informed Stabilization Treatment model that is influenced by IFS.
