My Approach to Helping

We offer a variety of services including treatment options that are highly specialized such as play therapy, animal assisted therapy, therapeutic art, yoga and EMDR. These services are provided by skilled clinicians who have certification in the treatment program they are offering. This is what sets us apart from other clinics or practitioners. Training for specialized care is rigorous and requires significant commitment to education post-graduation. We believe in ethics and not just checking a box saying we can do the work. Firefly clinicians are certified to do the work, receive ongoing supervision and consultation and are accredited by training programs or institutions. Areas of specialty include: relationships, grief/loss, chronic illness, abuse/trauma, PTSD, mood imbalances, child therapy, attachment issues, behavioral issues, anxiety, adoption/foster care, divorce and difficult life transitions or change.

My Personal Beliefs and Interests

The Firefly Institute clinicians are multi-disciplinary and collaborative. Clinicians are skilled at supporting individuals and family systems through life transitions, anxiety, depression and chronic illness. They carry expertise and credentials in trauma, play therapy, expressive arts and animal assisted human health.

Techniques I Use

Specialties

  • Attachment Theory External link

Attachment theory is a theory of affect regulation and interpersonal relationships. Adult attachment anxiety is conceptualized as the fear of interpersonal rejection and abandonment, negative view of the self or feelings of increased anxiety or depression within relationships. Children can experience insecurity within their relationships and the behaviors we see are a result of that anxiety.

  • EMDR External link

EMDR is a research-supported, integrative therapeutic approach designed to treat symptoms of trauma and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). EMDR also has effectiveness in treating anxiety, depression and other mental health conditions. Firefly clinicians can approach EMDR from a traditional or attachment-focused approach.

  • Play Therapy  External link

Play therapy involves using toys, sand, art, games, and other materials to help children express themselves. Play offers the child an environment of safety. If children are able to say what they think or how they feel through toys and art with someone who can translate their behavior and facilitate the process, they will respond positively and are able to successfully work through their problems.

Issues I Treat

Specialties

  • Family Conflict External link

Family therapy brings all the members together for problem solving, relational repair, conflict resolution or building skills for communication and interaction. We provide family counseling with children, adolescents and for couples support. Firefly also provides services to families seeking reunification therapy or for families who have court involved cases.

  • Child or Adolescent Issues External link

Children frequently have difficulty talking about what is bothering them or talking about events that have occurred in their lives. Our approach to counseling children and adolescents is to use a prescriptive method of play or expressive arts therapy (using the best fitting evidenced based practice that meets the needs of your child, integrated into hands-on work that brings counseling to life).

  • Self-Harming External link

Whether a person has recently started hurting his or herself or has been doing it for a while, there is an opportunity to improve health and find a new path for managing complex emotions or life experiences. Firefly provides individual, family and group counseling to address self-harming behaviors. We also offer an intensive outpatient program for those who need increased care and support.

  • PTSD External link

Trauma can be a single event or a series of adverse experiences that occur over time, these may include relational and interpersonal violence. Firefly believes in integrated trauma treatment approach, meaning there is no one-size-fits-all approach to trauma. This work is individualized and collaborative with the client and family integrating treatment practices for trauma recovery.

  • Anxiety External link

Anxiety is a common condition in which the person excessively worries about a variety of different topics or a specific topic or experience. This worry is excessive and uncontrollable and associated with additional symptoms of anxiety. Firefly clinicians are available to provide support from a relational and cognitive behavioral approach to reduce stress and worry and engage in life.
